A prominent megachurch in New York City is being sued for “gender bias” and “sexism” after they turned down a woman’s bid to become the first female Senior Pastor in the church’s 215-year history.
Forty-seven people applied to fill the position at Abyssinian Baptist Church following the death of longtime senior Pastor Rev. Calvin Butts in 2022, including radical racialist Eboni Marshall Turman.
Turnman graduated from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, the most liberal seminary in the world (see endnotes), and was the only female applicant. She insists she was met with sexism and discrimination during the interview process. One of her complaints is that search committee chair Valeria Grant allegedly told her that Abyssinian would only hire a woman as its Senior Pastor ‘over my dead body,'”
Turman, who was one of the pastors at Abyssinian but has since left in light of her lawsuit, is suing for” lost wages, lost benefits, other economic damages, shame, humiliation, embarrassment, and mental distress”- in the form of unspecified monetary damages.
A church spokesperson released a statement regrading the suite, noting in part: While she and others were considered for the role because of their impressive backgrounds, she ultimately fell short of some key requirements for the role, where other finalist candidates prevailed and moved forward in the process.”
Maybe God didn’t see her qualified.
Abyssinia is what people used to say as a joke instead of goodbye. Abyssinia, female “pastor.”
You know a country has really gone to hell when you can sue somebody just because you didn’t get the job. We need loser pays in our courts just to cut down on all of these obnoxious, nuisance “lawsuits”.
If she wins I am going to apply a hooters.
They won’t hire a 50 year old fat guy.
But I can wait tables.
Leftists are always “entitled” when they are not fully qualified
Good link. It’s unpopular to say this, but female pastors are heretical. The Bible is not an ala carte menu. It doesn’t need to stay hip with the prevailing culture. Women need to get over it.
As an educated, successful woman who has been recognized with national awards for excellence, leadership, and achievement, one could think I would argue that women are more than eminently qualified to be pastors.
I would not.
God made His wishes perfectly clear.
Men are to lead the church.
Ministerial Exception, religious bodies cannot be sued for discrimination regarding the hiring and firing of clergy. Because doing so would have the courts interfere with or judge church doctrine, which they are forbidden from doing.
This suit is going to get thrown out quick.
My guess is she doesn’t even care about God or the church…she’s another plant to rob, steal and destroy.
Surprised she isn’t suing the church for reparations and a new Cadillac.
But she should know that is reserved for real reverends, like Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson.
A woman tells a woman NO and it’s sexism? I’m at a complete loss to understand that.
EC
Taking her case to unbelievers instead of the Saints.
1 Corinthians 6:1
Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
Black church: “A woman doesn’t get hired and then they are quick to blame sexism. “
Go you one better: ARE PASTORS BIBLICAL?
Word is not found in Greek. KJV had it mistranslated from “poimen” which is shepherd.
Who is your favorite pastor in the NT?
No - you cannot find one. Strange, no? Why are none of Paul’s letters not addressed to a pastor? No, Timothy was not a pastor. He was an apostle with an apostles responsibilities noted in Paul’s letters to him that were beyond one locality. He mentored under Paul, was discipled under him as the other apostles were under our Lord Jesus.
In NT word is only found once in the English NT, a mistranslation in Eph. 4:11. The word is “shepherd teachers” as the two are linked in Greek. It is one gift & function - not a title or position. It is what elders are called to do.
The singular word “poimen” in the NT ALWAYS AND ONLY refers to our Lord Jesus. “The LORD IS MY SHEPHERD”.
The verb form of poimen is, in the NT, what the elders are charged to do. Read Peter.
Today “Pastor” is an exalted title and position that men (& women) covet - strongly forbidden by our Lord in Matt. 23:6ff. Interesting how we apply & practice what is not in the Bible and reject/ignore what is there - in our “Bible” churches.
Flame away.........

So, she was actually a pastor for them but wanted to move up in the business..
Humility? Born male?
[D]o not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
—1 Timothy 2:12-14[A]ppoint elders in every city as I commanded you—if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination. For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled, holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.
—Titus 1:5-9
Ditto. After a long, similarly rewarding career, I'm blessed to be in a church (LCMS) where men are the pastor, elders and ushers. The women do many vital ministries as well. It's so much more natural to be in a congregation with as many men as women rather than the women-dominated congregations.
“mono gainais andros (transliterated)” means literally means “husband (male variety) of one wife” in I Timothy 3’s list of qualifications for the leader of a congregation. The Apostle Paul received this insight from the Holy Spirit (See II Timothy 3:16 and its “theopneustais” (breathed-by-God) word for Divine inspiration.
In short, God declared the recipe for Bible-based congregations led by men who meet a very stringent list of qualifications.
This lady’s opinion has the worth of her opinion.
