[Catholic Caucus] BREAKING: Bishop Strickland barred from saying Mass in Diocese of Tyler, Texas

At a recent staff meeting, employees were reportedly informed that while Strickland cannot offer Mass in the diocese, he may do so elsewhere. The source is known to LifeSiteNews.

LifeSiteNews has learned that Bishop Joseph Strickland has been barred from saying Mass in the Diocese of Tyler, Texas.

At a recent staff meeting, employees were reportedly informed that while Strickland cannot offer Mass in the diocese, he may do so elsewhere. The source is known to LifeSiteNews.

LifeSite has also learned that Bishop Strickland is currently on retreat at an undisclosed location. It is not known if he has been made aware of the decision.

Strickland was unceremoniously dismissed from his post as the ordinary of Tyler on November 11 after refusing Pope Francis’ request to resign. He had been serving in that role since 2012.

The decision prompted massive outcry from faithful Catholics not just in the United States but across the world due to Strickland’s reputation for being an outspoken defender of Church teachings.

Strickland told LifeSite co-founder John-Henry Westen in an exclusive interview last month that “forces in the Church right now don’t want the truth of the Gospel. They want it changed.”

Bishop Joseph Vasquez was named Apostolic Administrator of Tyler by Pope Francis following Strickland’s firing. He served as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston from 2001-2010. He has overseen the Diocese of Austin, also in Texas, since 2019.

Strickland and his diocese came under intense scrutiny by hostile Catholic media after it was revealed that he was subject to an apostolic visitation in June 2023. The visitation was conducted by two retired bishops: Bishop Dennis Sullivan of Camden, New Jersey, and former Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tucson, Arizona.

As previously reported by LifeSite, according to Canon 416, a diocesan see is normally made vacant by a bishop resigning, transferring, dying, or having a “privation” made known to him by the Pope. Respected canon lawyer Edward Peters has argued that commentaries on Canon 416 suggest a “privation” occurs when “guilt for ecclesiastical crimes” is implied, and Strickland has not been accused of such behavior.

Strickland told EWTN’s Raymond Arroyo that he did not implement Francis’ motu proprio Traditiones Custodes, which called for placing undue restrictions on the Latin Mass, and that his failure to do so may have led to his dismissal. He also noted that all of the U.S. bishops who were associated with disgraced ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick are still in active ministry.

Strickland has previously said that he believes Francis “is the Pope but it is time for me to say that I reject his program of undermining the Deposit of Faith. Follow Jesus.” He has also praised the priestly Society of St. Pius X for “[continuing] to hold Tradition out for the Universal Church.”

This story is developing…

Frankie is a commie and a vicious, petty tyrant.
One thing that he is not is Catholic.

The Humble Pope of Mercy won’t be satisfied until Strickland is destitute.

note to Bishop Strickland:
I doubt you read here but you have already proven your call comes from the LORD. You do not need the covering of a POPE to continue in ministry. You may not be able to preach in a “Catholic” church. But you can preach and administer rights that are congruent with Scripture.
Your ordination came from and comes from God.
Pope Fancy pants is full of himself. Go out an preach brother Strickland. None of the weapons they fashion against you shall prosper!

So now we know his punishment has NOTHING to do with Bishop Strickland’s administration of the diocese, as saying the Mass has NOTHING to do with bookkeeping, bad hires, poor management.

It is purely punitive, and no real reason is given, because there is no legitimate reason.

The parishioners should all attend mass outside the diocese. It’s not that big of a diocese. They can drive to the adjacent one.

If attendance went down, the pope might use that as a justification for abolishing the diocese (adding the area to one of the adjacent dioceses). Dioceses have been suppressed before. Pope Francis is out to inflict maximum humiliation on those he perceives as his enemies.

The church has been growing in Tyler, and is doing well considering the state of the Church in general and the comparative poverty of the Tyler area.

However, history shows that no excuse is needed when dealing with a perceived enemy.

It is not just Strickland.

Francis is forcing the resignation of a bishop of the Syro Malabar church in India over not stopping priests who face the east during the consecration., this is one of the Eastern churches that recognize the pope.

Some of these churches did not acknowledge the pope, and I am not sure how they worship. But i suspect a lot of locals will just switch churches

I believe it was the other way around. The rebel priests refused to offer Mass ad orientem as the Eastern Churches ancient custom and the recent Syro-Malabar synod had called for and instead continued to offer Mass ad populum.

It is not atypical of Bergoglio; most bishops, including Bergoglio, refuse to offer, or even allow, mass ad orientem, yet the lone bishop who enforces ad orientem as decided by the recent local synod of bishops, is forced to resign.

VC II never called for Mass ad populum; it's just another rotten fruit, like Holy Communion in the Paw and on the Hoof, altar girls, etc. that the modernists later introduced in the "spirit" of VC II.

Mass resistance: Syro-Malabar priests defy papal delegate’s deadline

The uniform mode, adopted by the Church’s synod in 2021, is a compromise between the Syro-Malabar Church’s ancient tradition, in which the priest looked east (ad orientem), and the emergence of a post-Vatican II Latin-influenced practice in some churches, where the priest faced the people throughout the liturgy (versus populum).

He should defy Frankie the Fake and have a Solemn High Mass in honor of Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception.

He has absolutely no right to change any of the oriental rites. My gosh this man is a tyrant.

Anthony Stine ("Return to Tradition") had a good video on this this morning. This Lifesite story is apparently incorrect. Bp Strickland has been asked to refrain from saying _public_ Masses in the diocese until his replacement is installed and settled. He can say _private_ Masses ("private" in this case means "not advertised and attendance is by invitation only") however.

This is basically normal procedure when a bishop is replaced; he isn't being singled-out for punishment.
