!SURPRISING SALVATIONS!
THE DEMONIAC &
THE ADULTERESS

HOW THE TWO SINNERS’
SALVATION WAS SURPRISING:

1. THEIR SINFULNESS—They were wildly out-of-control, utterly beyond human intervention.

2. THEIR TURNAROUND—God confronted them, casting out Mary’s demons and rescuing the adulteress.

3. THEIR RESPONSE—We see Mary’s tears and devotion; and while we do not see the adulteress’ response, we can assume Jesus remained on her case.

Can’t recall offhand another painting which so drew me into the scene.

I like Tissot at 37. Imagine being on the verge of being stoned to death and you look around and only you and Christ are there.
Also like the one’s with the writing in the dust depicted. Can’t help but wonder what was written.

Can’t help but wonder what was written.

Many speculate, but I don't recall a satisfactory suggestion.

It is rare that the Bible seems to leave us wondering.

“Many speculate, but I don’t recall a satisfactory suggestion.”

One suggestion I like is that he was listing the sins of the assembled crowd.

Lord, you are the hope of Israel;
all who forsake you will be put to shame.
Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust
because they have forsaken the Lord,
the spring of living water.
~Jeremiah 17:13

I believe I first heard this association mentioned by Ravi Zacharias.

Interesting. Given the situation, it would be reasonable to infer Jesus would write the unmerciful stone-holders’ names.
