Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 4

The Believers Pray

23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:

“‘Why do the nations rage
    and the peoples plot in vain?
26  The kings of the earth rise up
    and the rulers band together
against the Lord
    and against his anointed one.[b]’[c]

27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

A huge family emergerncy has just come up, so I will share something I wrote about the Book of Acts and the Room-Shaking prayers of the Early Church:

The Tour Agenda said:

"MT. ZION/UPPER ROOM."

I was so excited! As we crowded into the little "upper room", though, it seemed weird to me. This was not 1st Century architecture. The room looked like a strange amalgam of Crusader arches and Arabic inscriptions, like a church turned mosque, and back to a church again. The rest of the building housed a very strict Hebrew School, a Museum of the Holocaust, and a tomb purported to be that of King David, but nobody was really sure about that.

Then somebody in our group started to sing. Then we ALL started sing and praying, praying and singing, and shouting praises to the Lord. The little room seemed to be shaking and reeling about, but it was the people singing and praying that gave it the motion. The Book of Acts seemed to come alive.

Ari, our Guide, watched this entire spectacle from the doorway. As we were filing out, he said to me (in his charming Israeli accent),

"OK, there has been some controversy about if this is really the place where it happened. After today, I have no doubt that this is the place."

I should have told him that it could have been any place, because "The Place" was in the Believers' HEARTS.
