By This We Know the Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error

5 They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 1 John 4:5-6 (NASB)

Several years ago when I still worked in an office I had a fellow with whom I worked, when he found out that I was a Christian, demand that I listen to his “reasoning” why “everything is relative.” I told him I would listen to him if he could refute the following statement, “Aren’t you making an ‘absolute statement’ when you say, ‘there are no absolutes’?” He chuckled nervously and left my cubicle. I still pray that God will save him. My brethren, the scourge of relativism is a blight within the visible Church. It causes people to flee from the absolute. When truth is seen as relative then in what or whom can anyone have faith and trust? Do we read the words of our Lord in Sacred Scripture ever saying, “Well, it depends?”

Just Fyi, Your biblical quote should have been vs 2-6... which would have included the full context and CORE of the spiritual test between truth and error.

The implication of reading only verses 5-6 would be that if someone doesn’t listen to us, then they are in error.

The actual test is in verse 2: “Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:”

Good point, and a faulty presupposition that many Christians operate under "If you can't see what I'm seeing in the way that I see it, you are obstinate or deceived."

There are other possibilities of course, including we are badly presenting the truth or that our own understanding of it is in error. Hard for someone to admit, though.

This is also a test. Today, there are those who claim to be Christians, but reject the Apostles teachings. They call themselves Red Letter Christians.

The APOSTLES teachings???

What about Jesus teachings???

This is what I’m talking about... the Word of God is NOT the Apostle’s teachings... Just like the opening post referring to a scriptural test, but EXCLUDING JESUS whom the said “Test” was all about.

I guess i’m one of your “red letter” Christians, because what Jesus said (red letters) is what the Apostles TAUGHT! and here you speak as if the apostles are the authority.

They are not.

Excellent article. When people tell me there is no absolute truth, I ask them if they’re absolutely sure.
