Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 3

Peter Speaks to the Onlookers

11 While the man held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon’s Colonnade. 12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.

17 “Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. 18 But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer. 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. 22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.’[a]

24 “Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets who have spoken have foretold these days. 25 And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.’[b] 26 When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Lord and Heavenly Father
My Lord and My God!
You are a Shield to me,
My Glory,
And The Lifter of My Head.
My Defense,
My Protection,
My Encouragement, My Hope!
You Alone are the One True God Over All!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Yesterday I spoke a bit about the Stairway to the Temple where Peter healed a man who had been lame from birth. When I toured these stairs back in 1984, exactly 39 years ago on this very day (my birthday!), I was overcome with awe. The steps had only recently been excavated, and had no walkways or signs to explain. Fortunately, we were accompanied by an Israeli Archaeologist who gave us a wonderful interpretation of the site. Today's Reading speaks of Peter going into the Temple area after healing the man on the stairway. Presumably, he entered through the Triple Hulda Gate, which is now blocked up, and then went to a shaded area called "Solomon's Colonnade". There, in the shade of the arches, Peter gives his second sermon recorded in the Book of Acts.

I am presently reading a book by E.L. Doctorow that takes place in New York City after the Civil War. One of the features of the city at that time was the proliferation of "Doomsday Prophets" who carried their message around the city on sandwich boards. This phenomenon seems to cause no end of mirth for the protagonist in the story. As a matter of fact, The Doomsday Prophet With The Sandwich Board Message (THE END IS NEAR!!!) has become an unfortunate stereotype that still shows up in cartoons and skits. While there is no shortage of Cults and False Prophets in today's culture, very few of them use sandwich boards to preach their messages.

In London's Hyde Park, there is a place called "Speakers' Corner". At any time there could be a "soap-box" orator pushing some political or religious topic. The term "Soap-Box" comes from an earlier time before we used corrugated cardboard to ship merchandise. Since boxes were made of wood back in the 1800s, they made a perfect portable speaker's platform for speeches. During the 1960's wooden milk crates took over this function, and served as bookcases, furniture, and fashionable decor as well. Now the decorating stores are full of FAKE soap-boxes and milk crates (Made in China), for a faux "Industrial" look.

More than anything, a soap-box is a powerful symbol of Freedom of Speech, a Right enshrined in our First Amendment.

The proliferation of faux soap-boxes in the furniture store is somewhat symbolic of what are are experiencing in our society right now. Even an innocent remark can be instantly and deliberately "misinterpreted" as a "racist" or "sexist" remark. And, although the left usually uses this tactic against the right, they sometimes get caught in their own net. This becomes particularly egregious around this time of year, as various traditional costumes for Halloween are called "racist", "sexist", "cultural appropriation", "violent", and so on. I am not a big fan of Halloween, but this is ridiculous.

In any case, I don't like seeing anybody (not even a liberal) lose their job over an innocent remark that is "politically incorrect")

Now, things were a bit different in the Roman Empire. The soldiers, governors, procurators, religious officials, and temple guards had ONE job...to keep the "peace". This was not "PEACE" as we define it, but a fake peace under oppression. What was called "Peace" back then was merely the ABSENCE of rioting. Not really "peace" at all.

Peter's bold speech in the Temple precinct occurred right after a well-known beggar had been healed and was leaping around praising God. This demanded an explanation, and Peter was empowered to get up on his "soap-box" and proclaim it. He includes himself when he speaks of the ignorance that preceded the Crucifixion of Jesus. He calls the People "FELLOW Israelites". He is one of them.

And it doesn't take long for the Authorities to swoop right in. Talk about being "Politically Incorrect!"

The Big Difference between the Soapbox Orators and the Sandwich Board Prophets is that, these days, we actually see Prophecy being fulfilled. The Jewish Diaspora DID return to the Land and become a Sovereign State. Israel IS surrounded by enemies. The Whole World DOES seem to be arrayed against Jerusalem. What was the subject of jokes in the 1870's has become a serious issue in 2023.

Jesus said that when we see these things come to pass, to "Look Up".

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

You’re welcome. I found this last Sundays to be really interesting. Three of one of the speakers was taken hostage.

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 5

To the leader: for the flutes. A Psalm of David.

1 Give ear to my words, O Lord;
give heed to my sighing.
2 Listen to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God,
for to you I pray.
3 O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch.

4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil will not sojourn with you.
5 The boastful will not stand before your eyes;
you hate all evildoers.
6 You destroy those who speak lies;
the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.

7 But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house,
I will bow down towards your holy temple
in awe of you.
8 Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.

9 For there is no truth in their mouths;
their hearts are destruction;
their throats are open graves;
they flatter with their tongues.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of their many transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
so that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
you cover them with favour as with a shield.
