Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Acts 1

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk[c] from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, “Brothers and sisters,[d] the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.”

18 (With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:

“‘May his place be deserted;

    let there be no one to dwell in it,’[e]

and,

“‘May another take his place of leadership.’[f]

21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Lord and Heavenly Father
Let Our Joy in Loving You,
Be so obvious that others are provoked to Jealousy!
Hosanna in the Highest!
You are Our Salvation,
You Are Our Defense
You Are our Refuge and our Strength.
Hear Us When we Call, oh LORD.
Hosanna, Oh LORD,
Save Us and Our Beloved from the Lion's Mouth.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Some people wonder about the Biblical description of the death of Judas. After all, the Gospels say he hanged himself, and yet, here is Peter saying that he fell headlong and "spilled his guts". The best way to interpret Scripture is with other Scripture, so what happens when they seem to contradict each other?

In Deuteronomy 21:22-23, there is an instruction to cut down anyone left hanging on a tree. The body was not to be left hanging overnight. Judas hanged himself in a remote area that already had a curse on it due to the pagan worship that occurred there over the years. It was in the Hinnom Valley, where the refuse of Jerusalem was dumped, and not on the main road. It may have been a few days before anyone cut down the body, or maybe had decomposed to a point where it fell from the tree all by itself, causing the gory result described by Peter. Remember, the suicide of Judas and the Day of Pentecost were separated by 50 days, so a lot could have happened in that time. There are many passages in the Bible which may seem like contradictions until a little careful study is applied. Then it makes sense.

Peter takes his first step in Leadership by choosing a Disciple to replace Judas. While some may cringe at the method of choosing by lot, remember that they prayed and asked God for guidance before doing so. Peter will show much more wisdom, boldness, and maturity in the days ahead. While some pious folks might chafe at what looks like gambling, let me remind you all that even taking out an insurance policy is a gamble. It's even a kind of gruesome gamble. YOU are gambling that you are going to get sick, die, or get into a car accident and get horribly injured. When you buy Homeowners Insurance you are gambling that your house is going to burn down, get struck by lightening, or have the roof torn off by a hurricane. On the other hand, the Insurance Company is NOT gambling. They know that, even if you DO have a disaster, their Adjuster will make sure that the Payout is minimal. There is a reason that the tallest skyscrapers in every major American City belong to Insurance Companies. They have to put all that money somewhere! But, in order to register a vehicle in Massachusetts, it has to be insured. A bank will not lend money for a home without Homeowners Insurance, Title Insurance, and, in some cases, Private Mortgage Insurance. So all of us participate in gambling every day without realizing it. The following is a little story I shared a few years ago about gambling with your life.

For my 50th Birthday, many years ago, I wanted to do something REALLY cool. Well, evidently riding 3.5 hours up the middle of Florida on a Harley wasn't NEARLY cool enough...and then I saw the Brochure:

"FLY AN ANTIQUE WW2 VINTAGE AIRPLANE!"

Now, THAT was cool. And a very fine way for me to celebrate my half-century mark. So I paid the fee, and my hubby watched nervously as the staff member fitted the parachute to my body.

"Why the parachute?", I asked innocently. "I'm not skydiving today."

"That's in case you have to bail," said the Instructor,

"If you hear me say 'BAIL, BAIL, BAIL' three times, unbuckle your seat belt, open the canopy, climb out and jump as far from the aircraft as you can, and pull the ripcord."

"No ejector seat?" I asked.

"Naw...those came out during the Korean War. This plane is from WW2."

"Do you still want to do this?," my hubby asked.

"Yeah! Let's Go!"

What followed was an amazing experience that I will never forget. It was a risk, of course, but on the other hand, I am not a gambler. I never even buy a $1.00 scratch ticket, because I HATE paying money for something and not getting anything for it, not even a candy bar. Somehow, I knew, though, when I got into that plane, that God was watching over me.

When the Apostles cast lots to replace Judas, they did it with prayer. The Prayer came first, and the lots weren't even a "gamble". They had not yet been filled with the Holy Spirit, and were still trying to find their way, so I don't think that they were actually "gambling".

Didn't I tell you that there was a lot of wild stuff in The Book of Acts?

My 71st Birthday is next Tuesday. I have not yet figured out what Bucket List Item I should do. Just a few miles away there is a Skydiving School...

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

I’ve been hearing on the radio and reading about warnings for tomorrow, that Hamas and Hezbollah are calling for violence against Jews all around the world tomorrow.

Prayer For The Safety And Protection Of Israel

Loving Father, I lift up the Jewish people and the nation of Israel to You in prayer, and pray for Your grace and protection to overshadow them as a people and as a nation. Lord, they are Your chosen people and the apple of Your eye, and yet there is an increasing drumbeat from the nations of the world to drive them in to the sea, that the name of Israel may be no more. Yet You have promised to make Israel into a great nation so that they are as numerous as the sand on the sea-shore and the stars in the heavens.

Guard and protect the nation of Israel, I pray. Give wisdom to their leaders, and guide them in the decisions they have to make in an increasingly hostile world. Protect them I pray, with Your mighty arm, and set a hedge of protection around their homes and cities, their families and their little ones.

I pray that You would thwart the evil plans and practices of their enemies, and prepare them for that terrible time of Jacob’s trouble, when Jerusalem becomes a burdensome stone for all nations and when the entire world turns upon the little nation of Israel.

Thank You, Father, that You know the end from the beginning. I pray that many would come to trust You as their Lord and Saviour, so that as a nation they will call on the Name of the Lord and return to the God of their Salvation. In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Psalm 56

To the leader: according to The Dove on Far-off Terebinths. Of David. A Miktam, when the Philistines seized him in Gath.

1 Be gracious to me, O God, for people trample on me;
all day long foes oppress me;
2 my enemies trample on me all day long,
for many fight against me.
O Most High, 3when I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
4 In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I am not afraid;
what can flesh do to me?

5 All day long they seek to injure my cause;
all their thoughts are against me for evil.
6 They stir up strife, they lurk,
they watch my steps.
As they hoped to have my life,
7 so repay* them for their crime;
in wrath cast down the peoples, O God!

8 You have kept count of my tossings;
put my tears in your bottle.
Are they not in your record?
9 Then my enemies will retreat
on the day when I call.
This I know, that* God is for me.
10 In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise,
11 in God I trust; I am not afraid.
What can a mere mortal do to me?

12 My vows to you I must perform, O God;
I will render thank-offerings to you.
13 For you have delivered my soul from death,
and my feet from falling,
so that I may walk before God
in the light of life.
