".... firm but not rigid..." What does that mean?
The Pope's creates dissonance or rather confusion regarding how a Christian "should be". He would lead one to believe that we change ourselves. I would find him more credible if he preached that we are changed in, through and by Christ in harmony with the Holy Spirit. We do not and cannot change ourselves. Also, Truth is absolute, it does not become "flexible" to placate the anti-Christ values of the time.
"You adulteresses [disloyal sinners—flirting with the world and breaking your vow to God]! Do you not know that being the world’s friend [that is, loving the things of the world] is being God’s enemy? So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." - James 4:4
The book of Jude warns of this - we are to show mercy but must be vigilant not to fall into the wrong way of thinking in showing said mercy.
