Yes on reflection that is a bit of an extreme comparison on my part. But creationists tell us that the earth is only 6,000 years old, and if that is the case it might as well be flat. I’m not a creationist in that sense, and I don’t think that God requires me to be. I can believe in God and the Bible and still have a realistic view of the world.

Only a subsegment of creationists
But at that point, you are setting *science* and human reasoning as the objective standard by which the Bible be measured. Of course, the 6,000 year old earth concept is based on supposition and human reasoning itself, so who’s saying THAT is true?
Since *science* is notoriously unreliable, why would you even considering rejecting the truth of God’s word based on the opinions and suppositions of those who claim to understand science and don’t realize the half of what we DON’T know about the world?
As far as the age of the universe, here is something for your consideration. I find it intriguing and a plausible explanation about the apparent discrepancy in ages.
Gerald Schroeder is an astrophysicist who is Jewish and knows Hebrews. He looks at the creation account in the Hebrew and makes many of his deductions based on that.
