To your primary question, the answer is, “We don’t know.”
In this life, we must accept that there are questions which have no answers. There is plenty in God’s universe that we will simply never know.
The scripture says that the day will come when “we shall know, even as we are known.” Until then, we have no choice other than to simply say that we don’t know.
I was thinking the exact some thing as what you wrote. I agree.
Here it is in my words:
We know that God is just and righteous. We also know that He made everyone so they belong to Him. The Word says that He so loved the world…..
I do not know the mind of God since His thoughts are not my thoughts. So in matters such as this, I leave it with Him.
There are some issues about Christianity and God that I can honestly say “I don’t know.”
He is the eternal and all powerful Creator God. We are mere humans with limited understanding.

I love Deut 29:29 “The secret things belong to God.”

Now we see through a glass darkly

To your primary question, the answer is, “We don’t know.”
I agree with you here. There are things we will not understand. Yet I will always believe God is merciful and can forgive those who love Him.
Questions like “Why is peanut butter sticky?” will never be answered.
