Mormon leaders, like the twice-married Nelson and Oaks, can't have it both ways on polygamy
Salt Lake City Weekly ^ | 07/05/2023 | Keith Burns

Despite unequivocal top-down condemnations of polygamy, the church's continued theological affiliation with plural marriage is not lost on its members. In perhaps the most thorough and effective treatment on this issue to date, The Ghost of Eternal Polygamy, LDS author Carol Lynn Pearson lays out the ways in which plural marriage continues to shape the teachings and practices of the modern church. She discusses the fact that LDS men are still allowed to become eternally sealed (i.e., married) in the temple to multiple women if their previous wife or wives have died.

Polygamy disavowed as a practice but not as a doctrine.

They can’t disavow it as doctrine any more than the Muslims can, since both religions’ legitimacy depends entirely on the reputation of their founder, and both religions’ founders practiced polygamy.

Does this mean they believe they’ll have multiple mother-in-laws in Heaven too?

Marriage has broken the barrier and entered the “consenting adults” world, in time polygamy will be a new “rights” issue, and Muslims, Mormons, and the left/non-Christians will at some point go for it.

Funny how you Hammock Christians miss polygamy practiced in the Bible. Your Victorian era versions you carry in your hip pockets must have those parts cut out.

Muslims believe that Allah gave Muhammad the strength to "visit" all 4 of his wives every night.

Yeah, it's right there from the beginning. God created Adam, and Eve, and Sally, and Kendra, and Tiffany, and Joan, and ...

Hmmm, maybe that's not what it says.

Just because something is "in the Bible" doesn't make it right. Plenty of folks in the Bible do wrong things. Even good folks in the Bible sometimes do wrong things.

Yes, the preferred reading of we “hammock Christians” is the Bible while lying in our hammocks. We are quite aware that some of the early patriarchs and Kings practiced polygamy but may I suggest you climb into your hammock for a little in depth reading of your Bible so that you will learn while polygamy was permitted by God it was NEVER His perfect will and in fact there passages in the Bible confirming this.

For example:

Genesis 2:21-24:

“So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

1 Corinthians 7:2:

“But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.”

The Bible has a lot more to say on the subject than these 2 verses by the way.

Matthew 24 4-5
4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.

That’s exactly right! I don’t know what these men are thinking or how they can make it with who knows how many wives! What a nightmare!

What about Steve, John and Matthew.....? In Islam, that would not be a problem because they will be used as warriors for Jihad.

Can't say as I've been called a "hammock Christian" before! Not sure what you mean by that but if you really think monogamy isn't taught in the Bible, you ought to read it a bit more. This might help: Does the Bible Permit Polygamy?.

It never fails to amaze me how people condemn a man committed to multiple women at the same time while celebrating men like Hugh Hefner and Charlie Sheen who openly lived with multiple women at the same time.

And men who have a wife and a mistress? That’s okay. But if he calls the second woman a wife then someone will call the cops.

Myself, I don’t care about committed and non-abusive polygamy when most mono couples can’t figure out how to commit!

Twice married? Please ... they were both widowers and remarried. Is that somehow wrong? ...or a sin?

All of those things you describe are wrong. We aren’t condemning one and celebrating the other. Howeve, only one of them is defended by supposedly God-fearing people because “it’s in the Bible”.
