Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Now that June "Pride Month" has been institutionalized nationally and indelibly etched into our American culture, it is critical for Americans to understand the Sodom and Gamorrah story of Genesis 19. Another similar Bible story is just as critical to understand; Judges 19–21, the story of the Tribe of Benjamin descending into Sodomy.
The of Tribe of Benjamin, unlike Sodom and Gamorrah, was not a gentile demon worshipping nation devoid of Biblical Truth. They had come out of Egypt with Israel by God's hand. They had faithful leaders like Moses and Joshua. They too received the first 6 books of the Bible from God. The Tribe of Benjamin however, like America today, departed from the Word of God.
After 340 years of being in the promised land, they left off following God’s Word and every man did what was right in his his own eyes (Judges 17:6). The Tribe of Benjamin was particularly given over to perversity and evil. In Judges 19:20 an old man comes in from his field work to see a Levite with his concubine lodging for the night in the street of the Benjamite City of Gibeah. The old man determines that the couple is just passing though and invites the wayfairers into his home. The couple does not know that old man is protecting them from the evils of the people of Gibeah…
Judges 19:20 And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. 21 So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink. 22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him. 23 And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly. 24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing. 25 But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go. 26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.
In a scene eerily similar to Genesis 19, Sodomites of Gibeah surrounded the house demanding to rape the outsider (male) lodging in their town. Where were the leaders of Gibeah? Where were the police? What about outraged citizens from the moral majority? Nothing. No restraints on the perversion. Why? Perhaps Gibeah had passed laws legalizing homosexuality and protecting homosexual activity? Perhaps in Gibeah Sodomy was not a serious enough crime to warrant intervention? Perhaps Gibeah had no money bail laws allowing criminals back on the street making arrest a moot point? Perhaps Gibeah simply didn’t want to be homophobic? Perhaps the leaders and police were in the crowd like today’s pride parades (and Epstein’s Island!) Perhaps those who initially stood against these evils were harshly chastised by Ted (#LGBTQI) Cruz types who never miss an opportunity to “gain the world” (Luke 9:25).
I have a friend who is a Bible Belt Missouri Lawyer. He recently represented a young man who was flagrantly groped by a Sodomite. In response the young man told the Sodomite, “Don’t touch me, Faggot!” The Sodomite responded by calling the police. The young man was charged with “aggravated assault motivated by hate” (possible 8 years in prison if convicted). No mention of the Sodomite’s Sexual Battery of the young man in the police report because police today are afraid of being accused of homophobia!?
My same lawyer friend revealed that Homosexual date rape is no longer being prosecuted in many American courts because it is a common activity in the Homosexual community. So if you happen to be on the receiving end of Sodomite Date Rape in 2023 America, it is assumed you were asking for it!? (Please guard your children everyone!)
The story continues with the old man offering his daughter (like Lot in Genesis 19) but being rejected. In desperation the Levite brought his concubine out to them. The woman may have had a troubled past from a troubled family (Judges 19:1–9), but she did not deserve being pushed out out to the ravenous monsters. It’s difficult to read biblical accounts of the depravity of man like this without asking why. Why God? Why did the man send his concubine out? Why did God allow this to happen?
We will never know the answer until Jesus Christ shows us one day, however we do know that God loved this woman and always wishes that no one should perish and that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). We can only hope the woman cried out to God while being brutally abused and slain? Sadly, she took her last breath reaching for the door. (Note: Sodomites don’t care what sex they defile to satiate their irrepressible perverted appetites).
Judges 19:27 And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold. 28 And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place. 29 And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve* pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel. 30 And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
The first chapter of Romans reveals that sin and depravity have different levels. People (and nations) have to go a long way before reaching the point of no-return in rebellion against the longsuffering and patient God of creation. However when they do, He hands them over to a depraved reprobate mind where they can no longer do what’s right. Sodomy is an outward sign of this condition. Like Sodom and Gamorrah, it is also an outward sign of imminent destruction…
Romans 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another*; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
The Levite placed his dead concubine’s body on his donkey and left Gibeah to his home in Ephraim. While it does not say that the Levite had to run the gauntlet to escape Gibeah in a manner like the 1972 movie, “Deliverance”, with Jon Voigt and Burt Reynolds, the Hebrew does see to indicate a hostile rising up (“Quwm”) to leave. Once home the Levite divided his concubine’s dead body into 12 pieces and sent them to the heads of the Tribes of Israel. When Israel’s leaders heard what had happened in Gibeah all the tribes were aghast, except one…
