The pre-Christian Roman Empire was rife with homosexuality, beastiality, pedophilia, abortion, and infanticide by exposure.
They did not value children much.
Jews and Christians saw children as a gift from G-d. They valued them immensely. In the Old Testament, G-d is adamant about child sacrifice, calling it an abomination.
Christians and Jews simply had more children, took better care of them, and often adopted children pagan Romans abandoned to die by exposure.
There were other factors of course.

The Egyptian Pharoah was having all the Hebrew boy babies killed. So, a different time and place, yet reminiscent.
The God of Abraham, Elijah, and Jesus has always abhorred the sacrifice of children.
People do not realize this was a revolutionary doctrine. They think every person in the world always loved and cared for their children, and sacrificed *for* their children.
This is not close to being correct. Many, many pagan tribes and religions have no problem with killing infants or young children, even their own, if the children are inconvenient.
