Rev. Robert Barron was chagrined, but not entirely surprised when he read Woody Allen’s ruminations on ultimate things. To state it bluntly, said Rev. Barron, Woody could not be any bleaker in regard to the issue of meaning in the universe. We live, he said,
“… in a godless and purposeless world. The earth came into existence through mere chance and one day it, along with every work of art and cultural accomplishment, will be incinerated. The universe as a whole will expand and cool until there is nothing left but the void. Every hundred years or so, he continued, a coterie of human beings will be “flushed away” and another will replace it until it is similarly eliminated. So why does he bother making films – roughly one every year? Well, he explained, in order to distract us from the awful truth about the meaninglessness of everything, we need diversions, and this is the service that artists provide.” (Woody Allen’s Bleak Vision, nationalreview.com, Aug. 12, 2014)

So then, who runs the casino, who set the rules of “chance”, the end turns into the “Void”?
That’s about the most un-scientific explanation I’ve read in quite some time.
Nothing. Then something. Then nothing again.
Guess ole Woody had to justify bopping his own daughter somehow.
I’m happy to know that G_d is in His Heaven and we will all face Judgement.

The idea of the “multiverse” was created to account for the literally astronomical improbability that the universe randomly developed in a way that made organic life possible and that chance mutations would lead to the diversity of life we see. Even more improbably, humans randomly evolved self-awareness and knowledge of good and evil.
When I hear, “We live, he said,“… in a godless and purposeless world. I actually hear:
“I LIVE in a Godless and purposeless world.”
I agree about the “multiverse.” By the way, if there are an infinite number of universes, one is heaven and one is hell.
I take self-awareness as direct evidence of the self, mind, soul. Self, mind, soul are certainly related terms, possibly synonyms. They are not material. They are you.
Atheism claims that self-awareness is an illusion. One might as well claim that the evidence of the (other) senses are illusions. Atheism likewise claims that free-will is an illusion. According to them, if you think you ever made a decision in your life, you are delusional.
Why do atheists make these unsupported claims? Clearly, to protect atheism. However, they do offer an argument.
Imagine an instructor and medical students surrounding a cadaver. He directs them to examine an organ. Let’s assume there are a small number of students, and no one is crowded out. They can all see the same organ at the same time. That is acceptable evidence according to atheism.
Let’s consider an instructor who leads students in introspection and mild sensory deprivation (closing one’s eyes, remaining silent, remaining motionless, etc.). After a time, he asks if they experienced awareness of their thoughts. They all say “yes.”
Evidence for the self? No! says atheism. While Sarah was aware of her thoughts, Bill of his, etc. Sarah was not aware of Bill’s thoughts. It was not a shared experience, in contrast to examining a cadaver.
It’s an argument, a flimsy one. One could just as easily make distinctions between seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, and smelling and declare that some are senses and others not.
