VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Clericalization led to the separation of the clergy from the faithful in the church’s liturgy celebrated before the Second Vatican Council, said Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, preacher of the papal household.
In his Lenten reflection March 24, the cardinal told Pope Francis and officials of the Roman Curia gathered in the Vatican audience hall that Vatican II’s reform of the Mass was a return from “a relatively recent past to a more ancient and original one.”
Through descriptions of the Mass from St. Justin in the second century and St. Hippolytus in the third century, he said, “we obtain a vision of the Mass that is certainly closer to the reformed one of today than to that of the centuries behind us.”
“What happened? The answer is an awkward word which, however, we cannot avoid: clericalization,” Cardinal Cantalamessa said. “In no other sphere was it more conspicuous than in the liturgy” before the Second Vatican Council.
Over the centuries, he said, Christian worship and the Eucharistic sacrifice changed “from being an action of the people into being an action of the clergy.”
As an example, he noted how in the pre-Vatican II Mass, the anaphora — the prayer consecrating the bread and wine as the body and blood of Christ — was said quietly by the priest in Latin behind a wall or curtain “out of sight and earshot of the people.”
Such a practice demonstrated an “evident return to what was going on in the worship” of the ancient Israelites when the priest entered the innermost chamber of the temple while “the people stood outside trembling, overwhelmed by the sense of God’s majesty and inaccessibility.”

Let me see if I understand this.
Vatican II changed the Latin Mass I grew up with in the 40s, 50s and 60s in order to make the Mass more modern, relevant and inclusive of the congregation, all in the name of propagation and preservation of the Faith. Now we are being told that that same Latin Mass is really the MORE MODERN Mass and the Mass with the guitars, drums, handshakes and priest facing the congregation is the TRUE, ANCIENT Mass?
Can someone please tell this old man who has been dancing at the edges of a return to the Church, why the Church of today is making a mockery of the Catechism I grew up in?
Yeah!
None of it makes sense.
If you let just ANYbody read the Bible the leadership might lose their grip on tradition and what-not.
Imagine what happens if uninformed, unprepared, inexperienced congregants get to read the Bible without the help of clergy!
Unbelievable!
That’s easy, my friend:
You get what you have today. Five thousand “Christian” sects all claiming to be the One True Faith because they “Just read the Bible, man” led by the Holy Spirit, who apparently has a different version of the “Truth” for each and every one of them.
Who knew God was so flexible and progressive, dude?
Better idea: Go with the Real deal, the one Jesus entrusted the writing and safekeeping of the New Testament to, and whom he promised the Spirit would guide them into all Truth. And to whom he gave the Keys to the Kingdom.
Please do return to the Church. The remnant wants company to defend the Faith from the crazies.
And Jesus loves you and wants you back, as he does all his Prodigal Children.
The ancient churches beg to correct him.
Indulge yourself much, dude, man?
There is One true Church!
(hint: it’s not the RCC)
But seriously, dude – man.
You don’t know the difference between a “religion “ and a relationship.
You think because the building has a label on it that says “Church” that it’s part of the Church. That’s where you come up with your numbers.
Just like you, I was once a member of one of those churches. That’s why I know its failings, its weaknesses, its in effectiveness for building God’s Kingdom- His Church.
One day, you will see who is counted as the children of God and who is not.
Everyone who says that has their own definition of Truth. God only has one.
I certainly do know the difference. I was once a seeker who stiudied with several of those groups. That is why it was such a blessing to come Home to the truth.
Failings and weaknesses? Of course. We all have those. And yet we all think we can “Know good from evil” without God’s instruction.
Christ hand-picked twelve disciples, yet one of them betrayed him As you know, That did not invalidate his teachings.
Don’t know where you hold out, Roccus, but I was an altar boy in the early 40’s, had a very bumpy ride in the 70’s and 80’s, but found the smoothest spiritual road I’ve been on in decades after finding an SSPX church when we re-located to Florida a number of years ago. I haven’t looked back..
It’s been like a time-warp for my wife and I. Assisting at the TLM at the SSPX chapel we’ve been attending for a number of years is exactly like it was in the ‘40’s. The processions, the hymns, the Stations, the Gregorian chants , the High Masses, the incense, everything. Totally amazing.
Most importantly, we have never felt more close to God than we have in our 60 years of marriage. The SSPX chapels are all over the country (and they’ll never be shut down by Rome), but if you’re ever in FL, find an SSPX chapel (there’s about 6 of them here) and start your life over again.
