VATICAN CITY -- Lengthy, abstract homilies are "a disaster," so preaching should be limited to 10 minutes, Pope Francis said.
Speaking off the cuff to diocesan liturgical directors Jan. 20, the pope said homilies are not academic conferences. "I sometimes hear people say, 'I went to this parish, and yes it was a good philosophy lesson, 40, 45 minutes,'" he said.
Homilies are "sacramentals" to be "prepared in prayer" and "with an apostolic spirit," he said.
But, in the Catholic Church, he said, "in general, the homilies are a disaster."
Pope Francis encouraged priests to keep their homilies to "no more than eight to 10 minutes" and always include in them "a thought, a feeling and an image," so that "the people may bring something home with them."

"To go to parishes and not say anything when faced with somewhat sloppy, neglected, poorly prepared liturgies means not helping the community, not accompanying them," he added.
Eight minutes of crap is no less crap than fifteen minutes of crap. How about focusing on the quality and not quantity of the homily?
Unless, of course, it's the content you don't like and what you really want is to cut it out altogether.
One of the few times I have agreed with Francis.
I don’t think a homily has to be long, but it should be quality.
I love homily and grits for supper.
That advice is stupid.
My most memorable homily was also the shortest. The priest was like 90. Got up and said, “you can’t take it with you” and sat down.
Weekday Mass, USAF base chapel, midsummer, air conditioner malfunctioning.
Sermon: “If you think it’s hot as hell in here, you’re wrong.”
Old cartoon of an assistant saying to a minister about to go to the pulpit:
“Try to remember people don’t like to be preached to.”
Short messaging videos work best.
I nominate this pope for worst pope in the last 200 years. Perhaps longer. I have rocks in my driveway who are closer to God than he is.
Probably the worst Pope in 1500 years.
Well,well,well.
The Old Goat finally got something right.
Pope Francis Holy Mass 22.01.23
The blowhard hypocrite rattled on for 12 minutes.
Do as I say; not as I do.
I've heard it put this way: A homily's first five minutes serve God, the second five minutes serve the priest, anything beyond that serves the devil.
I agree with the Pope on this one.
Memes would be perfect!
“Tickle their ears”, say the fake! “And keep it short”!
Anyone that worships such a man will not make it into the Kingdom of Heaven! None of those teachings are Biblical but instead are virtue signaling at its greatest.
My son’s Protestant girlfriend wanted to know why Catholic adults don’t go to Sunday School before Mass. I don’t know, but probably it dates from the days when you fasted until after Communion, so there was a lot of motivation to go to Mass early and get out on time.
I think a voluntary Sunday lesson that is, say, 45 minutes, and covers basics of the faith, and morality, would be a great idea, either before or after Mass. The 10 minute homily on the Scripture readings at Mass could stay as is.
This eight to 10 minute guideline is nothing new, it has been normative for homilies as long as I can remember. Some priests love to hear themselves talk and go over, of course, but when I recall the 20 minutes of droning pointless protestant sermons I sat through as a youth, I don’t complain. For a good homily, 10 minutes is sometimes too short.
