The Patriarchs of Moscow and Constantinople spoke about one another’s Churches this week, exchanging views about the poor state of inter-Orthodox relations and the geopolitical influence in the Church.
Yesterday, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia gave a presentation in the State Kremlin Palace as part of the 21st International Christmas Educational Readings, on the theme of “Global Challenges of Modernity and Human Spiritual Choice.”
Among a number of other topics, the Patriarch tied the poor state of inter-Orthodox relations today to the creation and partial recognition of the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine.”
According to the Russian primate, the Patriarchate of Constantinople is a pawn in geopolitical games, and any hierarch who recognizes the schismatics thereby proves that he also isn’t free:
I can’t fail to mention the serious crisis in international relations, which, unfortunately, has also affected inter-Orthodox relations. For several years now, external forces have been using the Patriarchate of Constantinople for their political purposes. Its position is very vulnerable, since the center is located in Turkey, on the territory controlled by non-Orthodox authorities, and the main dioceses and sources of income are located in the United States and Western Europe. It’s quite obvious that these factors deprive the Patriarchate of Constantinople of freedom, and therefore it’s through it that they’re trying to split the Russian Orthodox Church today by legalizing the newly created schismatic structure in Ukraine. Being under the powerful pressure of these forces, some primates, as well as hierarchs of a number of Local Orthodox Churches, also declared the recognition of schismatics. Here’s a very good indicator: If a certain hierarch defends the schism, it means that this person isn’t free, he’s controlled by other forces. Today, the attitude to the schism determines the level of genuine freedom of a.......

Schismatic? Is orthodoxy organized as a unitary church or as national churches? Since it is by national churches then the Ukrainian church has every right to be independent from the Russian Orthodox Church.

Figures you’d be on here defending apostates and The Puppet of Constantinople.
This guy Kirill is full of himself, isn’t he?
The Eastern Orthodox Church is a group of churches, each with its own head (autocephalous). But the ecumenical patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church in Istanbul (Constantinople) is the “first among equals.” Presently that is Bartholomew.
There are Eastern Orthodox Churches all over the place, with Russia and Ukraine just being two of them. So, Kirill is no higher authority than the patriarch of Ukraine, or any other Eastern Orthodox Church.
Even the Russian clerics have an exaggerated opinion of themselves. Is it something in the water in Russia?
Ok, please explain to me if orthodoxy is organized by national churches why shouldn’t the Ukrainian church be independent of the Russian Orthodox Church?
zElenskyy, Oaf Doltz and Barty the Apostate.
That’s not a very cogent response. Who is pulling your strings?
And his puppeteers want him to question REAL FR members.
Russia and the russian Orthodox church are demonic
Most of us in the west, if we think about it at all, think about the Protestant-Catholic schisms. But the inter-Orthodox conflicts are equally severe if not more so; The nationalistic basis of the various churches is a serious fault line which needs somehow to be overcome.
Yes. Patriarch Kirill likes his job and intends to keep it.
So says one who is defending The Puppet of Putin and his state “church”.
Those who live in the House of Frankie, the Dancing Boy of Islam, should be careful about casting stones.
I'm enjoying the drip, drip, drip of the news spilling out about our Last Real Pope, Benedict.
Two wrongs don’t make a right.
You should know better.
Perhaps you should clarify.
Bartholomew has Constantine only to thank for the honor of first among equals.
Metropolitan of Kiev and all Ukraine Onuphriy is the true head of the persecuted and banned Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Onuphriy is the real Orthodox primate in Ukraine.
And I mean the real Ukrainian Orthodox Church, not the One formed by Poroshenko, Pompeo, and Bartholomew.
Tikhon, metropolitan of America and Canada, supports Onuphriy.
It did not have to happen, this divison, and I think it symptomatic of the current Western obsession to meddle in affairs that is NONE of its business.
Kirill is right. It’s political, and simply wrong.
Is it something in the water?
Nope. The Ukrainian joke is not recognized by any of the other Orthodox. Never has been.
I don’t know why you post this stuff. No one here understands the church.
“Metropolitan of Kiev and all Ukraine Onuphriy is the true head of the persecuted and banned Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Onuphriy is the real Orthodox primate in Ukraine.”
Oh, quit with the high drama: The Ukrainian Orthodox Church was not persecuted or banned; the only crackdown was against the branch that was under the Moscow Patriarchate (the “Kirillian” branch). That Kirillian branch does not recognize Onuphriy as its patriarch.
Onuphriy has taken the following positions: He supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine; he stated that there were no priests in the Ukrainian Church who supported separatism; he said that “in a situation of continued military confrontation in eastern Ukraine, we emphasize that we unfailingly stand on the side of peace and support all peace initiatives of the UKRAINIAN authorities”; he said Russia’s invasion was a disaster for Ukraine, and that the war has no justification either from God or from people; he expressed “our special love and support to our soldiers who stand guard and protect and defend our land and our people. May God bless and cherish them!”
It sure doesn’t sound like Onuphriy is any kind of fan of Putin or Kirill.
