[Archbishop of Canterbury] Welby Fails to Calm Protestors Outside Lambeth Palace

The Archbishop of Canterbury was assailed outside Lambeth Palace last night by gay activists who denounced his leadership of the Church of England’s Living in Love and Faith process.

On 23 January 2023 approximately 40 activists, including campaigners Jayne Ozanne and Peter Tatchell, and politicians Baroness Hunt and Ben Bradshaw MP protested the House of Bishops to permit gay blessings, but not gay marriage in the Church of England.

The archbishop ventured outside Lambeth Palace to speak with the protesters, telling them to “get equal marriage” required legislation passed by a two thirds vote in each house of General Synod. The Church of England remained “deeply divided” over gay marriage, he noted, adding such a majority in favor of change did not now exist.

Mr Tatchell told the PA news agency the Archbishop’s appearance at the protest was a “PR move” and did not illustrate a willingness to help further their cause. He “just reiterated his stance opposing same sex marriage – and that is discrimination.“

Archbishop Welby had “not shown leadership. He has just sat on the fence,” Mr. Tatchell said.

Ms. Ozanne told reporters the archbishop had asked for names of those clergy who preached “messages that harm LGBT people” for further action.

“One of the things that angers me the most is that we talk about unity all the time,” she told the Press Association, “but that even talk of unity seems to exclude the LGBT community who are leaving in their droves.

The Church of England decided not to marry homosexuals, and the homosexual lobby is distressed. Much ado about nothing much, since almost nobody belongs to the Church of England anymore, and those who do are mostly too old to care.

I always thought the Archbishop of Canterbury was Catholic. I guess I’m stuck in Beckett’s time.

"I always thought the Archbishop of Canterbury was Catholic. I guess I’m stuck in Beckett’s time."

That went with the Reformation. On Henry ViII's orders, they destroyed the shrine to Becket, allegedly dug up his bones, burnt them, and scattered the "ashes" to the wind. Or did they? I'm currently reading an interesting book titled: "The Quest for Becket's Bones: The Mystery of the Relics of St. Thomas Becket of Canterbury" by John Butler.

Many Anglican clergy convert to Roman Catholicism after retirement. It is not uncommon. If you want to be a married priest, get ordained as an Anglican, be married and apply to become a RC priest...bingo, it’s done.

That’s interesting. Boy old Henry was the devil himself. Even if he decided against the Catholic church what has that to do with good man Becket.

Beckett was a canonized Saint. Henry felt that Becket didn't deserve the Saintly honor or shrine, as he hadf defied then King Henry II on many church issues. Henry VIII had the remains of many other Saints removed from the churches and destroyed about the same time. All this was done because the Pope wouldn't grant him a divorce from his first wife Catherine of Aragon, so he could marry Anne Boleyn. He broke from Rome, set himself up as Head of the Church of England (as it remains to this day), had his flunkies grant him his divorce, destroyed the monasteries, stole their land and wealth...all for a woman he would behead three years later. He also had John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester Cathedral executed because he wouldn't take the oath to honor the divorce or the split with Rome. Fisher was later canonized a Saint as well.

Forgot to mention, in defiance of Henry VIII, the Pope made Fisher a Cardinal shortly before his death.

The Devil roaming the world to destroy the churches. Never fear though, God is here, alive and well for those who believe.
