Many Brits were against the formation of Israel. Some saw it as the fulfillment of Biblical prophesy. Go figure.

The Bible is clear that the Jews will return to the Holy Land when Christ returns (or if you like when the Messiah gets here the first time). But there have always been some Jews living there and most Jews still do not.

Furthermore, the founders of Israel were not notably religious.

I won't reject out of hand that God has some purpose for the modern state of Israel, but that is not the same as building some elaborate narrative and claiming the Bible says so.

The Bible does not clearly say anything either way about the modern state of Israel as such.
