The Damar Hamlin Incident Has More People Talking About Prayer — and It's a Good Thing
PJ Media ^ | 01/09/2023 | Chris Queen

After last week’s scary moments when Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field during the Bills-Bengals Monday Night Football game, I’ve seen and heard a lot more people talk about prayer. I’ve never heard so much talk on ESPN about God and prayer, and it’s such a refreshing thing to see.

For starters, witness ESPN football analyst Dan Orlovsky’s heartfelt Tuesday prayer for Hamlin.

This isn’t some boilerplate, half-hearted prayer. Orlovsky, a devout Christian, prayed earnestly for comfort, healing, and peace in a way that viewers could tell that he meant it.

“It was on my heart,” Orlovsky told the Associated Press after his on-air prayer. “The more we pray, the more Damar may come out of it.”

Also on Tuesday, Buffalo Bills fans held a prayer vigil for Hamlin outside the stadium where he plays home games.

Other ESPN personalities have discussed prayer and faith lately, which is refreshing. The network included a praying hands emoji when it showed Hamlin watching the Bills game with some family members.

And the reliably woke NFL is trying to get in on the action — sort of. Here’s a tweet from before Saturday night’s game:

We are all thinking of you, Damar 💙 🙏 #LoveForDamar @jaguars | @titans

My pastor said very similar yesterday.

Let’s hope it sticks. 🤞

I’ll be honest, I’m tired of hearing about this guy. Luckiest man in town, he drops from vaxx poisoning and survives due to the medical staff at hand. What about the other workaday people who keeled over and died from vaxx poisoning last week? They’re turning this guy into another Jackie Robinson. Enough!

Instead of asking if he was checked for myocarditis we’re supposed to pray.

There’s a giant elephant in the room and it’s getting bigger every day.

The people who’ve rolled up their sleeves for the experimental wonder drug have joined in to not ask questions and mock those who are asking questions.

If this is dangerous it should be stopped and these people would also rather sweep obvious questions under the rug than admit they’ve been fooled so badly for so long. It says a lot about humanity.

God forbid it happens again......but if it does and especially if its a player in a non contact situation, just running down the field for instance, the nfl is gonna have a hard time explaining it.

Over a half century ago one nfl player died on the field of heart related reasons and that was because he had an existing blocked artery condition.

2 years after the nfl mandates covid shots for all players THIS happens?

I’m dubious to say the least.

Tebow wasn’t allowed to pray, but now it’s ok? Got it.

High school football coach fired for praying, but now it’s ok? Got it.

I haven’t attended an NFL game in decades. It used to be routine to see opposing teams gather together after the game and pray midfield. At one point the NFL purposely stopped showing it on TV. Did that practice actually stop? Or did they just stop showing it on TV?

You sound like an atheist. That’s ok.

So you know, part of the reason that people pray is because of the “there but for the grace of God go I” sensation. They pray because they fear the Lord (you can call the Lord in this case— the Unknown Unknown or the Known Unknown)They are acknowledging that they are not master’s of their own fate. You can say they are acknowledging that “Sh-t happens.” They are acknowledging that they cannot be so bold as to ignore these realities of the terrors beyond the boundaries of what they know. Because you never know. An atheist is comfortable with the word karma or luck to describe something similar —but these don’t come from God.

You might be right on the myocarditis thing. But most people don’t understand that. Certainly most football players have no inkling of it. They have to work with what they know...and don’t know.

I will sometimes credit Donald Rumsfeld as being the poet laureate of the 21st century. His signature poem goes like this:

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.

When you see people praying on the field like this, you’re seeing people recognizing the deeper realities that Rumsfeld points to.

And then, of course, they are also praying that the player felled by some cardiovascular event will heal. As they would want to heal in the same circumstances. As well, they would want people to pray for them if they were in the same circumstances. So they model what that looks like.

They were still doing it during all the hubbub with Tebow.

Russell Wilson used to participate in those very same huddles that you mention.

Never said a word to or about him

I have noticed that most players I’ve seen interviewed the last several months have been openly Christian, often thanking God. Even when they are not particularly good Christians (and frankly how many of us really are) I think this is a net positive. I have also noticed that the left has not attacked or mocked prayers for Hamlin. Even if this is in order to obfuscate the issue of harm caused by the clot shot, I think it is also a net positive that prayer is being done openly without challenge.

"They" have done an amazing job replacing him with the animatronic version. Looks just like the original. 99% of the public is fooled. Impressive part is keeping hundred or so hospital staff from blowing their cover.
