L U K E CHAPTER 7 Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.” Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. “Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said. Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.” Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

PLEASE NOTE: Jesus was anointed on (at least) two occasions: here, and also some time later in anticipation of his funeral, as Jesus said. The second time, Mary of Bethany poured costly perfume on Jesus' head and feet— as seen in Matthew 26, Mark 14 and John 12. New International Version ©1984

The beauty of stained glass windows, glorious!
Many favorites but Tissot at #6; Hole #12; a great #15; engraving at #26 and Becher at #41, are my choices for today. Happy New Year, Dan and All!

Good Morning Dan, and ‘Optimistic New Year Wishes’ to each of you!
Many beautiful works here, several of the unattributed are among the best.
Thank you Dan!

I have never noted previously how detailed Tissot’s works are. I find: In 1885, Tissot had a revival of his Catholic faith, which led him to spend the rest of his life making paintings about biblical events.

Yes, and wanting to be as accurate as possible, he made trips to the middle east to study the features of the people, the landscapes, the buildings, the costumes etc. Dan last year paid homage to Tissot with almost all he painted.

And to you!
And since you extend such felicitous and exuberant greetings to “everyone”, another year must not end without you clarifying for “everyone” just how to pronounce “Ciexyz”. (I’m afraid the pronunciation I am imagining sounds like my sneeze.)

You need good perfume if you refuse to bathe.
You contend she was not French. I will stipulate that while claiming evidence that the Vikings were present:

Anything is possible really. Perhaps she was a maid?
I mean if Gabriel could be Irish, and a "house of bread" is a gingerbread house... the skies the limit! 😉

Thanks, hope you had a nice Christmas.
Number 9 is my favorite.
To: thecodont
That is poignant. Wish I could have found a sharper image for you.
My Christmas was lovely, thanks. Ran a Christmas thread here to top it off.
Hope yours excelled, too.

Good evening Dan
#42 is a hoot
Thank you for hosting the gallery again.
#19, 22 and 25 are very raw...they best exhibit the pain when confronted with ones own sins, humbling oneself, clinging to the Son of God, then tears of joy when you understand the depth of His love and mercy.
