ROME (AP) — Opposition lawmakers in Italy are seeking a parliamentary commission of inquiry into three cold cases that have consumed the Italian public’s imagination for decades, including the 1983 disappearance of a 15-year-old that was highlighted in the Netflix documentary, “Vatican Girl.”
The aim of the inquest, said Sen. Carlo Calenda, would be to pressure the Vatican to finally turn over everything it knows about Emanuela Orlandi’s disappearance to Italian law enforcement authorities, saying its longstanding official claim of ignorance was “hardly credible.”
“We are a great secular nation that treats the Vatican with respect, but this case certainly cannot be considered closed in this way,” Calenda said Tuesday at a news conference announcing the proposed commission.
Orlandi vanished June 22, 1983 after leaving her family’s Vatican City apartment to go to a music lesson in Rome. Her father was a lay employee of the Holy See.

Two days later, the Orlandi family received the first of a number of anonymous phone calls. Emanuela was supposedly the prisoner of a terrorist group demanding the release of Mehmet Ali Agca, the Turkish man who shot the Pope in May 1981. No other information was given. In the following days, other calls were received, including one from a man identified as “The American”, due to his apparent accent, who played a recording of Orlandi’s voice over the phone. A few hours later, in another phone call to the Vatican, the same man suggested an exchange of Orlandi for Agca. If she went into the Vatican, but did not come out. She likely died in the Vatican, which makes it a criminal act.
It might be why the Vatican built Abraham House in Dubai.
Interesting story, and interesting how the Holy Sea makes these people ‘citizens’ of the Vatican for a year or two while they do tourist jobs there, and then ‘de-nationalizes’ them.
Growing up we trusted the church and our government. How stupid we were.
It’s why you don’t allow any organization to have power over man. Man cannot help himself, but become corrupted when given power.
