“There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel” (Proverbs 20:15).
Now, there is gold, it is just hard to find it. There’s plenty of it—somewhere. There is a multitude of rubies also, somewhere. But, he says, “the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel!” There are riches that anyone can freely have if they desire them. We may not have a lot or rubies or gold, other than what is in our wedding bands, but lips of knowledge that dispense wisdom are just as good as gold. They give life to the lost, and understanding to the spiritual.
One thing is we are going to a place that is filled with gold. It is said that in the day of Solomon, gold was so plentiful that silver was counted as rocks. In our day, gold costs $1,275 per ounce today, and when something is plentiful the price comes down. If gold ever fell to $50 per ounce, silver wouldn’t be worth anything. It is only $14.90 per ounce today. That is the law of supply and demand.
How many billions and billions of dollars would the Temple of Solomon be worth today? Can we even fathom what the New City Jerusalem will be worth? 1,500 miles long, 1,500 miles high, and 1,500 miles wide—and it isn’t plated. In fact, it isn’t even 24K, it is 1,000 karat—so pure that the Bible says it is like transparent glass. Truly Paul had it right when he wrote: “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” (I Corinthians 2:9). Despite what the song proclaims, the streets are not paved with gold—the whole city is made of the stuff.
And as much as that will be worth, how much more will our individual glorified bodies be worth to us? No more death, no more sickness, no more pain, no more no more!
The construction is going on right now, hopefully soon to be completed and ready: “In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). When the heavenly building program is completed, the trump will blow. Now, consider that it has taken 2,000 years to build that place and we can imagine what it will be like considering what He did for the heaven and earth in only six days.
And the reason why is that “lips of knowledge” are hard to find. Can any of us remember the time when we were lost? And you wanted to get saved? It’s hard to find anyone that can tell you how to get saved. Some people told you to join the church, get baptized, keep the commandments, follow the golden rule, pay your bills, live a good life. You know, “lips of knowledge” are hard to find. They are rare and valuable, these jewels, rare and valuable. They have great value because of their need.
They are profitable in time of need. A lot of people collect jewelry because when the monetary system falls, those things will still have value. They can command a return in exchange or trade. And so, they may take everything away from you, but if you can still tell people the old, old story of Jesus and His love, your lips will be like gold and rubies.
