Best-selling author and Chicago-area pastor Dane Ortlund may have fired a church employee in retaliation for complaining of bullying and discrimination, an Illinois state investigation has found.
Ortlund is the author of “Gentle and Lowly” and pastor of Naperville Presbyterian Church (NPC). The Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR), which handles charges of employment discrimination, investigated and found “substantial evidence” of retaliation in the firing of NPC’s former operations director.
Christianity Today first reported the investigation’s finding this week. The outlet noted that this type of finding is rare, both at the state level and nationally.
A copy of the finding obtained by The Roys Report (TRR) shows Emily Hyland had been a longtime church member. In 2013, the church hired her as the church’s operations director. Ortlund fired her in March 2021 nine days after she complained of sex-based discrimination to the church’s elders, according to the finding.
Ortlund did not immediately respond when TRR sought comment on the finding.
In a summary given to TRR, Hyland accused Ortlund of bullying and described months of “escalating discomfort” starting when Ortlund was hired as the church’s senior pastor in fall 2020.
Hyland wrote she was left out of relevant meetings and had duties reassigned. At meetings she did attend, she wasn’t called on for input, she stated.
“Many days I never heard one word from my pastor and boss,” Hyland wrote. “. . . . I felt invisible as a person, as a professional, and as a sheep in a flock I had been part of for 14 years.”

Is this the Ortlund family that hates Trump or different Ortlund?
Suck it up, Buttercup - or leave!
Depending upon one's "sense" of the situation, such circumstances might warrant approaching a senior church official for a "talk" - NOT a law suit.
Sounds like she is not acting in good faith.
Regards,
“escalating discomfort” Were they married?
Julie Roys seems to have an anger problem herself.
The odd thing in the reporting, is that the polity of the PCA church would not have the senior pastor fire a staff employee, the Session (Ruling and Teaching Elders) hires and fires staff. TE Ortlund could have voted against the termination of the employee. Not sure how true this investigation is by the state...
No actual conflict or active provocation is mentioned. She just wasn’t included in the decision making loop when the new boss took over.
How is this a state issue?

I don’t know a thing about the PCA and was hoping one of you did. I was hoping one of you could explain why this was happening.
Depends on the session. Some Elders are merely ‘Yes’ men to the pastor and refuse to confront him, even when the flock want him called out for teaching unbiblical doctrines - ie; saying “Social Justice’ is part of the Gospel ... just sayin
Might be uncouth to sue the term “butt-hurt” in this situation. But the culture has taught almost everyone to use terms like “discrimination” and “gender-based” to make claims.
I hope the truth comes out.
BTW - maybe Julie Roys is trying to do good work. But her motives are sometimes just a bit suspect.
For example she makes much of transparency and “right-to-know”. But the Church of Jesus Christ (IOW, true Biblical Christianity) has a structure and legitimacy founded in Scripture. And just because Julie “wants to know” that is not grounds to have all questions answered.
Not “sue”, but “use”.
The plaintiff was butt-hurt?
See my post 8 maybe some who are in this church know what is going on.
