Daily Mass Gospel Reflection - Sacred Meal Fellowship
Word on Fire Ministry ^ | 12-09-22 | Bishop Robert Barron

Second Week of Advent
Matthew 11:16–19

Friends, in today’s Gospel,
Jesus says, “The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said,
‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard,
a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’”

The Passover meal was decisively important in salvation history.
God commanded that his people share a meal to remember their liberation from slavery.
This supper provides the context for the deepest theologizing of the Israelite community.
Both the bitterness of their slavery and the sweetness of their liberation
are acted out in this sacred meal.

Jesus’ life and ministry can be interpreted in light of this symbol.
From the very beginning, Jesus was laid in a manger,
for he would be food for a hungry world.
Much of Jesus’ public outreach centered on sacred meals,
where everyone was invited: rich and poor, saints and sinners, the sick and the outcast.
They thought John the Baptist was a weird ascetic,
but they called Jesus a glutton and a wine-bibber.
He embodies Yahweh’s desire to eat a convivial meal with his people.

And of course, the life and teaching of Jesus comes to a sort of climax
at the meal that we call the Last Supper.
The Eucharist is what we do in the in-between times,
between the death of the Lord and his coming in glory.
It is the meal that even now anticipates the perfect meal of fellowship with God.

TOPICS: Catholic
KEYWORDS:
+++Jesus said to the crowds:
“To what shall I compare this generation?
It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another,
‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance,
we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.’
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said,
‘He is possessed by a demon.’
The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said,
‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard,
a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’
But wisdom is vindicated by her works.”+++

Thank you for posting this. Politics is important but when I scroll through FR it is always good to see something with an eternal and positive message.

“Sacred Meal Fellowship”

Another VC II novelty. It’s not a “meal”; it’s a “sacrifice”.

Don't have time to explain it to you.
Re read today's Gospel ...
the part about Jesus being mistreated
for eating and drinking with sinners.
I appreciate the reply.

Thank You for the thoughtful reply.

I think its always better to try
and stay on the "sunny side of life".
Curiously enough, you'll find more negative than positive
on the FReligion page...
Not supposed to be that way...
but it is...

Re read today's Gospel ...

I don't follow the bogus ordo calendar.

Here is today's Gospel:

GOSPEL

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

R. Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

Matt. 11:2-10

At that time, when John had heard in prison of the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples to say to Him, Are You He Who is to come, or shall we look for another? And Jesus answering said to them, Go and report to John what you have heard and seen: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise, the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not scandalized in Me. Then, as they went away, Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John, What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, those who wear soft garments are in the houses of kings. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before Your face, who shall make ready Your way before You.’

That's odd...
I've always been told...
And have seen for myself, that the FSSP was jiggy with the Pope,
And the Novus Ordo Mass...
Hmmm...

I've always been told...

As usual, you've been told wrong, probably due to hanging out with the wrong crowd.

The FSSP only offers the TLM; they refuse to offer the bogus ordo and they follow the traditional calendar not the bogus one.

As far as "jiggy with the pope": have no idea what you mean. I'm not up to date on the modernists' vocabulary.
