“Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength” (Proverbs 8:14 KJV).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength” (Proverbs 8:14 KJV).

“Counsel is mine,” Jesus is called the “counsellor, mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6). “and sound wisdom,” there is a wisdom of this world as defined in James 3:14-16 and it is earthly, devilish, sensual (connected with the flesh), and it produces envyings, confusion, and evil works. That’s the wrong kind of wisdom. That is the wisdom of politics, that is the wisdom of compromise, it is an earthly wisdom on how to just get along with people, winning friends and influencing people (usually for a profit).

The Bible addresses “sound wisdom,” is heavenly wisdom, and that is described in James 3:17, 18 and that is righteous wisdom. It is based on doing right, and it is “sound wisdom” because that is going to bring you to a right relationship with God. “Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom.”

“I am understanding,” a man will never have any true understanding until he gets saved and then gets a close walk with Jesus Christ. Only after he gets in the Book, and reads the Book, and applies the Book, and practice the Book. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22 KJV). “But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding” (Job 32:8 KJV). Also consider Job 12:9-25. Wisdom says, “I am understanding.”

“I have strength,” which is where the believer gets the power to “be a doer.” “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” (Ephesians 6:10 KJV). We can be strong, because He is strong. “The joy of the LORD is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice” (Philippians 4:4 KJV). We are to learn to rejoice in what God is doing with us, what He is doing for us, through us, by us, and to us. That will give us joy because God is working all things together for our betterment, for our encouragement, for our growth as Christians.

Dr. Austin L. Sorenson once wrote:

““Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee . . . Who passing through the valley of Baca [weeping] make it a well” (Psalm 84:5, 60.

“My friend, God washes the eyes, by tears until they can behold the invisible land where tears shall come no more.”

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
