Daily Mass Gospel Reflection - Making Fishers of Men
Word on Fire Ministry ^ | 11.30.22 | Bishop Robert Barron

Feast of Saint Andrew, Apostle
Matthew 4:18–22

Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus calls his first disciples.
What is it about this scene that is so peaceful and right?
Somehow it gets at the very heart of Jesus’ life and work, revealing what he is about.
He comes into the world as the second person of the Blessed Trinity,
a representative from the community which is God—
and thus his basic purpose is to draw the world into community around him.

Jesus says to Simon and Andrew, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."
This tells us something about how God acts.
He is direct and in-your-face; he does the choosing.
"Come after me," Jesus says.
He is not offering a doctrine, a theology, or a set of beliefs.
He is offering himself. It’s as if he’s saying,
"Walk in my path; walk in imitation of me."

Finally, Jesus explains,
"I will make you fishers of men."
This is one of the best one-liners in Scripture. Notice the first part of the phrase:
"I will make you..."
This is counter to the culture’s prevailing view that we’re self-made,
that we invent and define our own reality.
Jesus puts this lie to bed. We learn from him that it’s God who acts,
and if we give ourselves to his creative power,
he will make us into something far better than we ever could.

KEYWORDS:
+++As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee,
he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew,
casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.
He said to them,
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
At once they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers,
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.mending their nets.
He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father
and followed him.+++

Monday's thread of The Bible in Paintings covered this with 40 images:
JESUS CALLS FISHERS OF MEN

Here are some examples:

Barron, as usual, reveals his hypocrisy.

Rather than fishing for men, Boobie told a Jew, Ben Shapiro, that Jesus Christ is just the "privileged way" to salvation.

Is Jesus Christ the ‘privileged way’ to salvation—or the only way?

Bishop Robert Barron Has Misled Ben Shapiro

For the Record: Father Harrison’s Comment on Bishop Barron’s Words to Ben Shapiro

Why must you continue to post the musings of a hypocrite bishop, who has recently been promoted by Bergoglio, another hypocrite?

"anti-Semitic Schismatics"

I knew you would come back with the tiresome "ad hominems", Murph. Totally unrelated to the fact that Barron refused to preach Jesus Christ to a Jew.

As far as "fishers of men", Barron tosses his back in the sea to be devoured by sharks.

Awesome pics for sure...
Your work with art here on FR is a daily joy...
I've been blessed to visit Uffizi, the Louvre and Vatican.
No doubt it can't help but move the human nature.
No doubt your posts also can draw us into (pun intended), [for those who have not travelled the galleries] draw us into the beauty of God, as intended.

Learn more about your sect'c founders...

My "sect"s founder, is Jesus Christ and I will carry out the Great Commission, unlike Barron and Bergoglio, who both have discouraged non-Catholics from converting.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

P.S. My college suitemate of two years was Jewish. He's now a Catholic, a traditional one at that.

What say you, Murph? Christ came to convert jews, gentiles and all peoples to the true faith.

Why do you, Barron and Bergoglio reject the Great Commission?

P.S. I'm ready for you incoming ad hominems.

And just what is it you are praying for the "Jews" convert to ?
The Church in which Pope Francis is the Pope?

You are pretty twisted there.
