“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment” (Proverbs 17:22-23).

KEYWORDS:
“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment” (Proverbs 17:22-23).

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine,” the underlying truth to this thing is, just don’t lose your sense of humor. Reader’s Digest probably had it right when they said, “Laughter is the best medicine.” It probably is. Just don’t get so tight, and so serious, that nothing is ever funny anymore. You can’t do that. You just have to have a period where you laugh and just have a good time.

Just don’t look too late night comedians to furnish you with reasons to laugh. Those blasphemers will see you in an early grave if you laugh at their blasphemous humor. Go to camp meetings, they usually have a good time there. Also, there are some pretty good Christian comedians. But one of the best sources for humor is often yourself. Learn to laugh at yourself. Fellowship with your brethren in the Lord and find some things to laugh at. “Rejoice with them that rejoice” (Romans 12:15).

You just have to keep your sense of humor. The problems and the pressures of this life will get you down—you just better laugh at some things.

“. . . but a broken spirit drieth the bones,” it will kill you. A doctor will tell you, especially when you grow old, that if you lose the spirit to live, you will die.

The “gift” here spoken of is a bribe. The numbers of federal judges and state judges that have been arrested and convicted of selling their judgment to the highest bidder is one of the great travesties of our country. It is unthinkable that justice in those courts was not according to the Law but for sale to the highest bidder. Close to this are those judges who believe that their role is not to judge a thing, but to legislate laws from their bench.

“Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed; To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!” (Isaiah 10:1-2).

It is also incomprehensible the number of police officers that are on the so-called take and are paid to look the other way while drugs are brought into our cities, and other crimes. A godly nation can not long remain such and permit these things to go on unchecked. There is widespread corruption in government, in the judiciary, and in the police and it is a shame that those kind of things happen. It is, in fact, so bad that it has even entered into to our sports games where referees are paid huge amounts of dollars to determine the result of a basketball game.

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
