Back when Harry E. Fosdick finally thought he had laid the groundwork for getting the congregation that he mistaught to follow him into error, they called the apostasy he was selling “Modernism” ... this despite the fact that there was nothing modern about its bag of bads ... thankfully he lost his job instead and the Modernists, being exposed as heretics, either left congregations or forced believers to leave congregations all across the USA.
... and probably elsewhere too, but I do not know about that....
So it wasn’t a split so much as a separation of water and oil.
As another consequence the Modernists started calling themselves other things.
The way that Fosdick and others like him operated should not surprise anyone as they infiltrate in secret, and they were doing so long before Gramsci and the cultural Marxists ever hit on the idea.
What this fella is ascribing to this process is classic infiltrate and chip away at the foundations, or rather the fundamentals, of faith till the fundamentals are not adhered to any longer.
