“A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved” (Proverbs 12:3).
We need to understand that everything we do; we do for God. Why do you go to church? And with what kind of attitude do you go? It’s like, if you're not coming for God, you're missing something. Why did you get married and start having kids, and labor to get a decent job so you could make a living for the wife or the husband and the kids?
Well, you should have done all that for the Lord, and if you'll get up tomorrow morning and go to work for the Lord and drive for the Lord and you know, eat for the Lord, and make money for the Lord, and bring it home for the Lord, and then come home and roll the kids across the carpet for the Lord, and all those things there's an awful lot that will be taken care of with regard to your dirty mind. “Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established” (Proverbs 16:3). The busier you stay for God, the better off you are.
“Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war” (Proverbs 20:18).
“Every purpose is established by counsel,” it doesn't say everything you do, in other words, you do not need to run to your pastor for good counsel every time you get ready to walk out the door to do something. It doesn't say that every work is established by counsel, but every purpose is established by counsel. The fact of the matter is, well. ask yourself some questions. Why are you doing what you're doing? Why are you working where you're working? Studying what you're studying? Reading what you're reading? Doing what you're doing? And those purposes need to be established by counsel and a man that won't be instructed in those things is brutish. And that counsel is the counsel of the Holy Spirit. We are to evaluate everything we are about to do against the word of God, or one might say, “seek God’s face in every matter.” Pray about it, and get the clear leading of the Holy Spirit in your life? What is clear? Anything that is not accompanied by a feeling of confusion. Remember, “God is not the author of confusion, but of peace” (I Corinthians 14:33). And the pastor should be consulted for those times where a little more wisdom is required.
Somebody comes for counsel, and he only wants to hear what he wants to hear; because when somebody says, “Well, that's probably not a good idea because . . ..” Wow, that's like reproof! He came to the guy for instruction, but what he got with the instruction was a little bit of reproof.
Well, he doesn't want to hear that, and so he goes ahead and does what he wanted to do anyway. That's a brutish move. Okay, “a man shall not be established by wickedness,” folks sometimes are wicked because they first of all do not commit their works unto the Lord; and so their thoughts wind up wicked. And, “a man should not be established by wickedness,” because their purposes are not established by counsel. They don't go to somebody that's wise to ask if this or that is a good idea, and then after a while he gets a little way down the water tube and he can't even stop.
“A man shall not be established by wickedness; but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.”
Now, Jesus Christ is the root and offspring of David. He is the bright and morning star. That seed that was sewn on the stony ground sprang up, but it had no root in itself, and so it died. So, the first thing you need to be is saved, and then the root of the righteous shall not be moved. Psalms 1 says that man shall sit down there and be like a tree planted by the rivers of water. The water goes up through the roots system, and so it's your root, it's the word of God, it's Jesus Christ.
