“An hour is coming,” Jesus informed the woman, “and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. “Spirit” does not refer to the Holy Spirit but the human spirit. Worship must be internal, not external—it must be from the heart. “Truth” calls for this heart worship to be consistent with what Scripture teaches and to be centered on Christ.

True worship is both internal and external. Human beings, unlike the angels, are composed of both body and spirit. When we worship God, we must do so with our whole beings, not just half of them.

We instinctively know this is true. When we pray we bow our heads and go on our needs. When confronted with the awesomeness of God, we may even throw ourselves down on our faces in prostration as we see many of the prophets and the saints in the Bible do. Even Our Lord gave us this example when he prayed, lifting his eyes to heaven and falling on his knees in the garden.
