Meanwhile, the Catholic Church in Cuba criticized various elements of the bill, arguing that 'it is a child’s right to have a father and a mother.'
HAVANA (LifeSiteNews) – Cuba approved lengthy changes to its family code with allowances for same-sex “marriage,” surrogacy, and adoption, officials reportedly announced on Monday.
The measure passed in what the Associated Press described as an “unusual referendum” for the communist country, which usually sees 90 percent victory margins in elections. According to country’s Electoral Council, the proposed changes received 66.9 percent approval and 33.1 percent rejection with 74 percent of the 8.4 million eligible voters participating.
The 100-page family code also legalizes same-sex civil unions, contains measures regarding gender violence, and grants broader rights to grandparents.
It is of course difficult to know how accurate these figures are when reported by a country with a history of political oppression. The U.S. State Department said in its 2021 human rights report that Cuban elections are “neither free nor fair,” citing government control over candidates and limited political expression.
Monday’s announcement came after years of struggle over the reforms and opposition from social conservatives. Legislators reportedly abandoned a same-sex “marriage” legalization effort in 2018 but it was eventually approved by Cuba’s parliament.
President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who advocated for the law, tweeted on Monday that “Love is now the law.” The measure also found support from Mariela Castro Espin, daughter of former President Raul Castro, who leads the Cuban National Center for Sex Education.

During the post-Ian days that we were without power or internet, I pulled out my wind-up radio, which has AM, FM, and two SW bands. For the halibut I tried something I hadn’t done since the turn of the century: listen to shortwave. I stumbled upon the English version of Radio Havana, and they were propaganda-ing about the evolution of the socialist rules on the family, and how Cuba was going to begin to allow same-sex marriage and supporting transgenders. It frankly shocked me, but it shouldn’t have: the Left has embraced almost all forms of sexual depravity, and the remaining examples are coming down the pipeline for sure.
communist regime said it would pass, so it passed.
the people do not have a say.
It has been a long time since I listened to shortwave. I used to hear stuff out of havana, quito, and the old soviet union. How many channels do you still find on shortwave?
I only found two in English, a religious channel and Radio Havana; I was surprised as to how many commercial radio stations in Latin America were still broadcasting shortwave near 80 meters, since I used to listen to them way back when I was in college. (At least half the AM stations today in my bailiwick are Spanish, and one is Creole.)
When is it Iran's turn?
