Cuban priest Jose Conrado Rodríguez Alegre sent an open letter to Pope Francis in which he reprimanded him for his silence in the face of outrage by various totalitarian regimes.Especially Cuba.
According to the Catholic parish priest of the San Francisco de Paula Church, in Trinidad, Sancti Spiritus, “We know very well that when the Holy See does not explicitly and firmly defend the victims, totalitarian governments feel free to take action against their victims.”
“I must admit that it has become more difficult for me to honestly affirm that ‘The Pope often surprises me, but he never lets me down.’ The most powerful person on earth. But it was very difficult for me to see a very clear smile with the dictators of the Left: Maduro, Ortega, Evo Morales, and a few others”He underlined.
Rodriguez Alegre referenced a letter that he addressed to the Supreme Representative of the Catholic Church in 2018, where he indicated that he understands that “you have gone through the painful experience of a right-wing dictatorship.”
But he acknowledged that, for the same reason, he found the silence of the Vatican paradoxical when, as a result of Francis’ visit to Cuba in 2015, “dissidents were prevented from greeting the Pope at the nuncio in Havana, as he was and the next.” On the day the situation was repeated in Havana Cathedral: the Holy See remained silent and did not hold a formal and public protest against the behavior of the Cuban government, at least abusive to the Pope and disrespectful to dissidents and opponents whom they wished to say papal hello, albeit briefly.
