The Great Western Schism made it explicit that cardinals do not have the authority to depose a sitting pope...Ironically, what was implicit from the schism is that lay powers have the de facto ability (if not the outright authority) to depose a sitting pope.

Does the writer explain why Cardinals have no power to depose a Pope but lay persons somehow do?

It's like what happened in 2020.
