“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased” (Proverbs 9:9-11 KJV).

KEYWORDS:
“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased” (Proverbs 9:9-11 KJV).

“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser,” in other words, when you go to teach somebody you need to see that there are some people in this world, Christians included, that you can’t teach. They are not about to learn anything, and they are not about to change what they believe. You can’t make them any wiser, for they are set in their ways—they have already been taught—and there is nothing that you can add to them.

True wisdom teaches you that you don’t know everything, no matter how old you get in the Lord or not matter how deep you get in the Bible there is always something that you can learn.

“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser,” see, that man is wise in the sense that he knows that he still has a lot to learn, and he knows that other people can teach him things if he will just listen.

“teach a just man, and he will increase in learning,” notice that a wise man and a just man are alike. A just man in the Old Testament is a man that is living according to the Law. He has personal justification in that he is keeping the law. In the New Testament, that is not true. You are not just because you keep the Law, you are just because you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, the Just One. “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24 KJV). “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him” (Romans 5:9 KJV).

In the Old Testament, a just man is a man that keeps the Law, keeps the sacrifices, and does what God tells him to do. He has good works, and he also has faith, which a man would have to have in order to do what God tells him to do. In the New Testament, there are no works attached to it. It is entirely by grace, and it is entirely free. A just man is a man that does right.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” This is where it all starts. We deal with this in detail in 1:7.

“. . . and the knowledge of the holy is understanding,” begin to learn what God thinks about life. The important things—the knowledge of the holy in God’s eyes. In the Old Testament the Law was holy and just, the Tabernacle, the Priesthood—those were holy things. The priests ministered about the holy things, the shewbread, the Holy Place, the Most Holy Place.

In the New Testament we have a Holy Bible “. . . and the knowledge of the holy is understanding,” in other words, this Book right here will give you understanding, but you have to read it. The Holy Spirit is Holy. Knowledge of Him and by Him will give you an understanding of the New Testament. “And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:28 KJV).

So, we get understanding from two places. Number one, stay away from what’s wrong, and number two, learn all you can about what is right.

“For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased,” again, wisdom is talking. The years of a man’s life in the Old Testament were how long? “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away” (Psalms 90:10 KJV). If a fellow were to make it past 70, there would be troubles.

Verse 11 is an Old Testament promise of longevity.

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.

Title:Excellent! Funny!

Is it "funny" or is it worship from the guitar player's view?

I don’t get much enjoyment out of it, but others might find it an interesting side view.

This makes me think much on our Lord’s Living Water, a flowing fountain we drink from often, always satisfying and refreshing, necessary.
