“Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil” (Proverbs 3:7 KJV).
Verses 6 and 7 are a contrast. A person that will commit all his ways to the Lord doesn’t trust himself, but the Lord.
“Be not wise in thine own eyes,” don’t have the attitude that you can handle it, you’re the captain of your own fate, the master of your soul. That is blasphemous folly! That is just being “proud, knowing nothing.” Not only is it pride, it is arrogance.
“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened” (Romans 1:21 KJV).
“Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise” (I Corinthians 3:18 KJV).
Humility is a tremendous asset to our character. Most people, raised up in the public school system, has had pride inbred into them through sports, competition, and scholastics. By the time they get out they have very little humility left.
“In all thy ways acknowledge him, be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord.” What’s the result? “Depart from evil,” that’s understanding. “And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:28 KJV).
A good, healthy fear of God will keep you out of a lot of trouble. Not a ‘reverential awe,’ but a real honest to goodness fear of God! That’s the problem in America. People are just not afraid. There is no fear in sin, they see no real harm is a little sin. We fool with a whole lot of the wrong kind of things, but we don’t see anything wrong with it. And that is the problem—they don’t see.
“Depart from evil,” that’s understanding.
And so it is with God, for He has given me a Policy Book (the Bible) to follow. Many things are made clear to us in the Word, and only occasionally will there ho situations where I will need to ask for clarification.
God gave Joshua a Policy Book: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success” (Joshua 1:9).
