JONAH PREACHES,
NINEVEH REPENTS!

CHAPTERS 3&4

Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”

Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city—a visit required three days.

THE NINEVITES BELIEVED GOD. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh:

“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”

When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.

But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. He prayed to the LORD, “O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I KNEW THAT YOU ARE A GRACIOUS AND COMPASSIONATE GOD, SLOW TO ANGER AND ABOUNDING IN LOVE, A GOD WHO RELENTS FROM SENDING CALAMITY. Now, O LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

But the LORD replied, “Have you any right to be angry?”

Jonah went out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. Then the LORD GOD PROVIDED A VINE and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the vine. But at dawn the next day GOD PROVIDED A WORM, which chewed the vine so that it withered. When the sun rose, GOD PROVIDED A SCORCHING EAST WIND, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”

But God said to Jonah, “Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?”

“I do,” he said. “I am angry enough to die.”

But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?”

The miniature at #4, from a Book of Hours, is splendid.
The sculpture at #14, the distinctive work of Ruth Collet at #19-20 and always Dore”. Thank you always for this great OT.

Whale of a story.

The scale of Nineveh, as discovered by archeologists, is stunning.

Thanks for that very interesting link. I read some and scanned the rest. Your reference to its scale is certainly justified: the king’s palace alone had 160 million bricks.

Jonah’s cross-cultural protest of God’s concern for the Ninevites finds a parallel, I suggest, in the disciples’ antipathy toward the Gentiles. There was a lesson there for them if they’d had the wit to notice. And we have lessons there for us.

What is interesting is I had always thought Nineveh was a real place, not some fictional representation or allegory as alleged by nitpicking Bible fact checkers.

As it turns out, Nineveh had been rediscovered in the 1800’s and proves the Bible to be a history book but, also the rule and guide of our faith.

It is thought that Monotheism has it’s origins in Nineveh and the Jewish people originated that thought

I suppose the modern discovery of Nineveh's remains was one of the earliest of what has become an overwhelming body of subsequent discoveries, contributing mightily now toward your thesis.

It is thought that Monotheism has it’s origins in Nineveh

Perhaps, but Adam, Cain, Seth and Noah might claim primacy of place.

The site of Nineveh, present day eastern Mosul, is said to host the tomb of the Prophet Jonah, though several other locations make the same claim.

Ancient Nineveh was not far from the ancient city of Ashur (Assyria).

Hello Dan; thank you for selecting some artists which are less known- a fine grouping under this topic.
As always, so many lessons for us in this story from God’s Word.

You give me excessive credit, Leon. These are all the works I found. Apparently, this subject—God rescuing Ninevites—did not much interest painters of renown.

Oh if only this nation would repent and invite God back into our institutions, then we might look forward to a 100 year respite as did Nineveh.

Yes, but it won't happen, in my view. As I've explained previously, in my opinion we are already in the Tribulation--and our culture will continue disintegrating as we journey through it.

This is a good thing, paving the way for the Rapture and then Jesus' return.

I agree with you 100%
we will not repent as a nation
God has given them over to a debased mind
we are in the tribulation
and our King is coming soon!
