Indiana became the first state since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade to pass a near-total ban on abortion.
Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) signed Senate Enrolled Act 1 within the hour after both Republican controlled-state chambers passed the bill during a special session on Friday.
The bill passed in the House, 62-38, in the afternoon and later in the Senate, 28-19. No Democrats voted in favor of the legislation, with some Republicans joining them.
Some exceptions are included in the abortion ban, such as rape or incest ten weeks after fertilization, endangerment of the mother’s life, and if the fetus has a fatal diagnosis. Under these exceptions, the procedure is only permitted up to 20 weeks after fertilization.
If an abortion is to be performed under one of those exceptions, it is only permitted to take place in a hospital or a facility owned by a hospital, the Associated Press (AP) reported. This means that all abortion clinics will lose their license, the news agency noted.
If a doctor performs an illegal abortion or does not properly file the required reports, they risk losing their medical license.

Me thinks a total ban is intended to show how unworkable it is, so that the majority relents and allows abortion again.
No, I think if a doctor performs an abortion he should be charged with first degree murder. I suspect that would be a pretty good deterrent.
Fake headline. This is FAR from a total ban.
On its’ face, it seems to me that the 20 week limit is an issue. Does this mean that if a fetus dies after 20 weeks it has to be carried to term? Or if a woman finds out she could die in childbirth after 20 weeks that she has to go through with it no matter what? I thought our governor and legislators were smart enough not to fall into that kind of trap. Am I misunderstanding this?
Stupid Michigan has anti-Tudor Dixon ads for governor making her look like a war criminal for being against abortions and being honest about it.
No one seems to cite
1-1.5% are due to rape.
2.5-2.6% are due to health problems of the mother to save her. And 0.5% are due to incest.
So along with the fact nearly all states protect the women from ectopic pregnancy crisis (and that is not “abortion” even under the Catholic Church definition), there is a LOT of talk about a tiny percentage overall.
Nearly all abortions are about career, family needs, woman’s opinion about family size and the pressure from a boyfriend or husband being against the birth of the child. Among other reasons.
But discussions are mostly “you heartless politicians are forcing women to have babies after being raped.”
Pro-choice...Knees together or knees apart.
Works 99% of the time.
This is a non-issue in Indiana. All the people who voted against are either Democrats or Republicans in heavily democrat (Marion County) areas.
I just checked the Indy Star. Only an op-ed about abortion. Nothing else. No one in the state has mentioned this. Out of state newspapers are talking about it, but ours here in town is silent, and it’s a small-town socialist paper that no one reads.
The silence to me is damning for the left. Why have local news organizations already quit talking about it? It just happened. In my mind, it’s because so many people from Indiana are ok with this law.
You are absolutely right. How would anyone know exactly WHEN conception actually occurred, right down to the very day, or even hour? How long is the probability range? 20 weeks, plus or minus 3 days?
Are we supposed to expect all doctors to agree when fertilization occurred?
If the fetus is dead, it is not an abortion.
Those kinds of situations happen and are horrible (happened to one of my besties from high school) BUT are best handled by actual, factual doctors in legit medical facilities.
This is no ban on abortions. It has the ridiculous “exceptions” in it, which means killing the baby for the sins of the father. The 10 week rule that says you don’t have to tell the cops you were raped or even mention the rapist. You don’t have to sign a thing just go to PP and say you raped or a relative got you pregnant. No one knows if you been pregnant 2 and months or longer. This is the worse “pro-life” bill I’ve ever heard of.
