“Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger” (Proverbs 5:9-10 KJV).
God will give you honor and riches from serving him: “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” (I Peter 1:7 KJV).
Don’t give your honor to another! Don’t give your honor to the Devil or sin! God wants to honor you as a Christian. God wants to bestow honor and glory on you at the Judgment Seat of Christ. Now, if you are saved you are going to get to heaven, but don’t lose your honor along the way.
“Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel,” use your years for Christ—don’t give them to the cruel.
Only one life will soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ shall last.
If you are going to play sports, play sports for the Lord Jesus Christ. Play right, do right. If the rest of them cuss, don’t cuss. Be different. You all heard of Charlie Hustle? I wish there were a Charlie Hustle of Christianity. Do everything will all the zeal you can muster. Some Christians get an open door, and it takes them three years to go through it. Be like Peter, run as fast as you can to first base—even when you get a free pass. You only have one life. You only have one chance to serve Him. Do it now!
“Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth,” the Prodigal son’s wealth went to a stranger.
Verses 9-10 is the picture of a backslider. When God begins to deal with you, first of all your honor goes down the drain. The respect that people had for you as a Christ vanishes life a puff of smoke. Then before you know it, your testimony is gone. Then your wealth is gone, “and thy labours be in the house of a stranger.”
You’ll end up working for the Devil and the world, and you are strangers to them.
John C. Paton, a missionary, had this to say about the cost of honor.
“Amongst many who sought to deter me was one dear old Christian gentleman whose crowning argument always was, “The cannibals! You will be eaten by cannibals!” At last I replied, Mr. Dickson, you are advanced in years now, and your own prospect is soon to be laid in the grave, there to be eaten by worms; I confess to you that if I can but live and die serving and honoring the Lord Jesus, it will make no difference to me whether I am eaten by cannibals or by worms.”
