I've heard that often and I don't doubt it's true in many people in the past. It's kind of taken on urban legend status like the stories of the mean nuns with the rulers-- many more people tell the story as a joke than actually experienced it. Neither one is something you'd find today, or in the last 60 or 70 years or so.
But, as a Catholic Bible teacher, I talk to a LOT of older Catholics about the Bible and just as many say they never experienced it. Today in the Catholic Church, there are so many good resources available for studying the Bible, there is no excuse.
I was told that I shouldn’t read the Bible because I couldn’t understand it. The priests and nuns were trained and knew how to interpret it and if I had questions, I should ask them and they’d tell me what it meant.
And that was in the late 60’s, and told me by a nun.
It was MY past (not some "urban legend").
So, the "Holy Roman Catholic Church" DID mislead its adherents in the past but not today. Okay. Fine.
I declare (for all the reasons listed in THIS thread and hundreds of others* over the last couple decades): That "church" has led people into eternal condemnation for tens of centuries.
You earnestly believe in its "teaching" and you teach it - your "destruction is not asleep." (2 Peter 2:3b)
