“He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster. The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe” (Proverbs 18:9-10).
This is the lazy man, but not everyone is actually lazy—they just run around in circles and waste a lot of time. Some guys just don’t have the motivation to get up and do something, and others get up and don’t do a thing, but they stir up a lot of dust just running around in circles, aren’t doing a whole lot better. Others think just because there is a lot of activity going on, it must be all right. Well, that isn’t always true.
People waste time, waste money, waste opportunities fooling around with the wrong thing. They may be busy, but that doesn’t mean that they are productive, or even doing the right thing.
“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). At the first coming His name was called Jesus, which means Saviour. At the second coming, He will be called Emmanuel, which means “God with us” (Matthew 1:23).
His name is a strong tower of salvation: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Jesus is a name that is powerful enough to heal: “And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all” (Acts 3:16).
That name was so powerful that it evoked the wrath of the leaders: “Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us” (Acts 5:28).
Nobody gets upset when you teach in the name of Buddha. People don’t get upset when you tell them about something that Confucius said, because they are generally laughing at it. But, boy, you preach or teach in the name of Jesus, and all kinds of people get all upset.
“. . . the righteous runneth into it, and is safe,” a great illustration of this is found in the book of Judges.
“But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower. And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire. And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to brake his skull” (Judges 9:51-53). That woman rocked Abimelech to sleep.
That tower was a place of fortitude and refuge. When the enemies would come the people would go into this tower. This is an Old Testament picture of our security in Christ. The Lord’s Word and His name are our strong tower, “and the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”
