Safe Passage.
When Jesus had secured a safe passage, the way through the maze of space and of stars and boundaries that separate the earth from the heavens, he told his disciples “I am going to make a home for you, that where I am you may be there with me also”. “I leave with you my peace, while you remain in this world you will have tribulation, but I have overcome the world, I will send down the Comforter, who is the first taste of your heavenly inheritance”.
As in this dry season, having to water our garden, the Holy Spirit is the hydration to keep our souls like a well-watered garden. Thomas asked where and why? Jesus replied, “I am the way the truth and the life, no man can come to the Father but by me.”
After serving in the military for over twenty years and moving from place to place, we retired and bought a home.
For me, who as little girl, spent much of my childhood just trying to survive it. My grand daughters are becoming teenagers. I was showing them the room I had made for them when they were little girls, full of vintage dolls and furniture. After their father left them, my husband and I helped our daughter give her babies safe passage. These little girls, whose laughter and joy of discovering a world through the eyes of a safe child, gave me the chance to play with them and to discover, as a grandmother, a passage back through time, which blessed me with a similar albeit late enjoyment of a childhood.
God gave my heart, a home, and my husband has been my safe passage to love. We are celebrating forty years of marriage this summer. Looking back at our journeys, we see how God united two halves of the heart of a man and a woman. A woman, by the way, can be defined as the home of humanity. In the home of my heart and body I carried to safe passage the lives of our children and guided them on their journey into full grown, godly people. As we help our granddaughters navigate through the teenage years, recalling when once they played dress up in the vintage wedding gowns, my daughter and I will help them plan their own weddings someday, safe passage into womanhood.
Now, in our golden years, we are going to take a journey to Door County, Wisconsin. We want to see the light houses on the Great Lakes.
When Jesus was asleep in a boat during a storm, the disciples woke him up and cried “don't you care that we are going to drown?” “Did I look like I needed a bath?”, Jesus could have replied. Instead, He told them to have faith and then he commanded the storm to stop and gave them safe passage.
As our bodies enter our later lease on life, “though our outer bodies perish, our inward man is renewed day by day”, God is giving us safe passage on a journey to his heart.
Recently, we had a tornado show up on radar, it was forming in our back yard. Jesus told us to use power in His name, so we stood together and commanded the storm to not harm our home. The storm did not tear up what we worked hard to build; radar showed how the storm had moved off without a tornado doing harm. We were given safe passage it this storm. We had learned the power of being in the One who created all things for our enjoyment; we are now the light houses who have stood the test of time to give our younger generations light and guidance as they start their journeys. We give them a safe passage and stories of life at sea. Jesus went before us and knows the way to guide us to safe havens.
Later, as the season changes, we will gather in front of a fire on a cold winter night snuggled under a quilt and drink hot chocolate, the stories of storms and shelters will swirl around us and bring remembrance of His good will and grace towards us.
We reflect on how, in our country, it seems that other ships with no captain try to take the safe harbor given them and fail to heed the Light of the World. When God looks down and sees people trying to abort his plan for humanity to go on, he may decide to separate the church from the state and give final safe passage to those who have trusted their souls to the captain of their salvation!
Amen!
