New Russian State Holiday Honors Traditional Christian Marriage - The Day of Family, Love, and Fidelity
Global Orthodox ^ | 7/1/22

Russian President Mr. Vladimir Putin has signed a decree establishing June 8 as an official state holiday, Day of Family, Love and Fidelity. On this day the Orthodox Church commemorates Ss. Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia of Murom, revered as patrons of Christian marriage. Mr. Vladimir Legoida, the Chairman of the Russian Orthodox Church Department for Relations with the Society and Media, has remarked on this occasion:

- "Once again, the President has underscored the importance of the family for our nation. Let me remind you that the holiday has been celebrated in Russia since 2008. It has come a long way from a popular event to being recognized by the government. This has happened thanks to many public organizations and individuals concerned with the reinforcement of traditional values in our society.

If we want this new holiday to affect our lives, then changes in the public space — first of all in the media space — must correspond to it, not to mention the cultural space in general, including literature and cinema. Family, loyalty, childbearing, and selfless help to others, ought to be mainstream in the information space."

Well, that’s nice. Russia is honoring a Christian tradition while at the same time killing Christians in the Ukraine.

Disclaimer: I was 8 out of 10 pro-Putin before the invasion of Ukraine. My pre-invasion posts will bear that out. But nope, I can’t defend him now. Putin is just another in a long line of war criminals, monsters who kill innocents and break things.

A bit jealous

It's pretty obvious to me which civilization is on the rise and which civilization is in decline.

Russia is using Orthodox Christianity as a tool for the means to an end (national identity). But at least they chose correctly, whether their leadership believes or not.

Putin, the murderer who kills his political opponents, buying “christian” support - that is 100% all it is.

Actually, Ukrainians have been killing Russian speaking Ukrainian Christians since 2014. Russians are stepping in to stop the massacre. Quite handily I’d say.

Yes, I have read reports of that. And I believe it. There seems to be some kind of low-level civil war going on in eastern Ukraine. That does not make Ukraine right. But it certainly makes Russia wrong.

Nation A ought not interfere in the internal affairs of Nation B.

Think about it this way. It can be fairly argued that the United States treated native Americans poorly in the late 1800s. That would not give anyone else the right to invade the United States.

You want to complain, or ask for sanctions? Okay. But to invade and start breaking things and killing innocent people, no.

It’s not a simple Russia bad for me, key event setting this in motion was western backed coup in 2014. Ukraine was being built up for 8 years (Nato recently admitted), and was actively shelling the Donbas region. I do try to imagine if that was happening in the U.S. backyard, and what would be the response. Heck we went across the globe to invade Iraq for what again? I do feel awful for the Ukrainian’s, wish this never happened. I do feel like the west is using them as expendables for a bigger goal, which is frankly evil. Don’t like this war at all.

I think a holiday recognizing family, love, and fidelity is all well and good. However, by restricting it to CHRISTIAN family, love, and fidelity — if indeed that is what the holiday does; or, even more limiting, RUSSIAN ORTHODOX (which 53% of Russians follow) — it is telling Russia’s Jews, Moslems, Agnostics, etc. that they don’t count.

That’s a good way to create serious division within one’s country.

“By their works you shall know them”

also

“Trust but verify”

Both of these ideas work together to build trust and friendship...

Please permit me to add something to my post #12. If Putin was only interested only in protecting the ethic Russians in eastern Ukraine, he would not have had his armor strike towards Kiev. He would have gone for eastern Ukraine, and nothing more.

Something very complicated is going on here. I’m not quite sure what it is. But one thing is for sure. Russia is wrong, and Putin is a war criminal.

That’s not to say that the EU, NATO, and Ukraine are all right. There really are no clean hands here.

And by the way, this is how WW I started - many folks just fussing around.

We celebrate perversion and the Russians celebrate marriage. Yet, we have neocons here that still think we’re morally superior to Russia.
