2nd KINGS
CHAPTER 2

Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”

“Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.

“You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours— otherwise not.”

As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!”

Detail

And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them apart.

He picked up the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the cloak that had fallen from him and struck the water with it. “Where now is the LORD, the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over.

The pipe organ is as much a work of love as it is a thing of beauty.

The organ goes back to an instrument that was built in the years 1683-1684 by the organ builder Johann Jobst Schleich and his assistant Nikolaus Will. The original case of the main organ on the west gallery was built by Johann-Jobst Schleich. The painted front pipes of the Praestant 8′ are also original and are playable. The instrument was built by the Weiß organ building company in Zellingenrebuilt several times. The organ has 64 sounding registers (4,266 pipes) on four manual works and pedal. The pipes of the Chamadenwerk stand on grinding and sound chambers; the other pipes are on cone leads.

The actions are electropneumatic, those of the Chamadenwerk are electric. A special feature of the instrument are the special celesta (carillon with brass bells, c 0 -d 3 in the swell mechanism) and carillon (tube carillon, g 0 -g 2 in the distant mechanism). In addition, the organ has an adjustable cymbal star (8 tones, brass bells) with a visible, rotating star in the main tower of the case; the cymbal star comes from the instrument of 1683/84.

Who would have thought that Salvador Dali sketched Elijah leaving the earth?

Much like most of modern Germany, there is a lot that we don’t understand about the heart of a man.

A relief indeed! Good morning Dan, and happy Sunday to all.
An exciting event in Biblical history; even Salvador Dali shows up! Thank you Dan.

Dali did some exquisite paintings of the crucifixion as well.

Excellent! All great depictions but probably my favorite is the “fenster” at #37.
Salvador Dali created 105 watercolors for the Biblia Sacra. Here is an article you might like.

Who painted #47?
That one seemed to be the most Biblically accurate: Elijah going up in a whirlwind of fire (and not a chariot).

etabeta, thank you for the link to that excellent article about Dali and his relationship to the Albarettos.

My perception of Dali is from his secular popularity, and I did not know that he created a series of portraits called Biblia Sacra.

Very much appreciated.

I found #47 here, but it does not attribute the artist.

I was thinking the same thing. Read literally, the text seems to imply that the chariot of fire separated Elijah from Elisha, but that Elijah was actually taken up by the whirlwind.

I like #61 in which “Elisha Slaps the Water with His Cloak”. I long had trouble imagining how one could “strike” water with something like a cloth mantle, but rolling it up first to make it more rigid makes a lot of sense. This illustrates it nicely.

Here is one famous painting by Dali of the Crucifixion. It adorns the cover of one of my favorite books, “Life of Christ”, by Fulton J. Sheen:

I agree that rolling the cloak first seems like the most likely approach. However, there also might be an element of “helping God” inherent in rolling it, whereas God can certainly part the river with the mere touch of the unrolled cloak.
