“Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts. All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him” (Proverbs 19:6-7).
“Many will intreat [or beg] the favour of the prince,” the prince has authority, the prince has power, so when you get a traffic ticket you don’t go to the poor to get your ticket taken care of, you go to the prince. You go to the country commissioner—a guy that has some muscle—when it comes to politics and things like that.
Esther intreated the favor of the king to save her people. It wouldn’t do her any good to go to the maids, or the chamberlains. When it comes right down to it you are going to have to go to the top, or as near to it as you can get.
“. . . and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts,” Christmas and birthdays are big deals in America. In Esther, Ahasuerus gave many gifts which made him popular among the people. Actually, all governments that are in power are popular governments. When they become unpopular, revolution occurs. The way they make them popular is by withholding the truth from the people. The people can only judge by the facts that they have, and if they are told by their government that they have it better than anyone else, they believe it.
Americans don’t seem to like their freedoms. They are constantly trying to give up their basic human liberties to communists and socialists. The older people know better, but the youth are becoming the decision makers now and they are leaning away from capitalism. Why? Because we have allowed ungodly teachers to corrupt their minds for decades, change the facts of American history, and teach our children that our forefathers were racists. And those that could have made a difference in stopping it just stood back and let it happen.
A man asked Benjamin Franklin, “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?” “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
“All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him?” This is the kind of nitty-gritty of life, this is the bottom line. The reason nobody wants to be around him is that he is constantly hanging around them looking for a handout, and money to borrow. He has nothing to offer them, and they don’t want to offer him anything.
They avoid him because they know he is eventually going to try to hit them up for some money, and they also avoid him because if they needed help financially he is the last guy to give it to them. It isn’t very popular to hang around poor people if you want something from them.
“. . . he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him,”
