PROFITING FROM PROVERBS – 6/12/2022

“Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish” (Proverbs 12:1).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
“Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish” (Proverbs 12:1).

This word, “brutish;” you know what a brute is. A brute is a big old dumb beast. We think of an ox, or a donkey, or something like that; “but he that hateth reproof is brutish.” left to ourselves, the fact of the matter is that we are all brutish.

Did you know that sometimes a brutish man has two doctorates to his name? I don’t know who said, “Not all great men are wise,” but he was sure right. Consider Psalm 92 starting with verse 4, “For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands. O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep” (vss. 4-5).

Do you know that for sure? One thing about it, when you read the Bible through you come out with the understanding that the One that wrote it is a lot smarter than you, as you really comprehend so little of it sometimes. The Lord thoughts are very deep. You have to admit that. Consider what it says in the next verse, “A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this” (vs. 6).

One of the marks of a brutish man is that he does not know that God’s works are great and that his thoughts are very deep. He looks at the Bible as some sort of a contradictory bunch of nonsense, and it is that way to him because it doesn't make any sense to him, in spite of the fact that he has a bachelor’s a or master’s or a Doctorate from some university. He looks up in the sky and he sees the order and the design, but he sees it through the prism of evolution. Evolutionists do not believe there's a Designer, and so the Lord calls that man a brutish man. He's just like a thumb ox. He's got a brain the size of a walnut as far as spiritual things are concerned.

America is an idolatress nation, and it is not because we run around and dance around the fire eating raw meat while wearing loincloths. It has to do with our idols. A man can be perfectly clothed and perfectly comfortable and still have a bunch of idols, and America is bad about that. And in the same way, in respect to this, a man doesn’t have to be stupid, and he doesn't have to look really dumb in order to be brutish.

“How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves? They break in pieces thy people, O LORD, and afflict thine heritage. They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless. Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it. Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?” (Psalms 94:4-9).

A brutish man thinks that God’s not going to catch him. He thinks that, if there is a God, God doesn't see him. Well, if you read the Bible you know there is nothing dumber than that. God is omniscient, He is omnipotent. “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3).

It takes an idiot to say, “God doesn’t see me!” He is like the little kid that thinks he's hiding when he covers his head with a blanket. He thinks that nobody can see him. Well, you have guys with a couple of doctorates to their name putting their head underneath the blanket and saying, “God doesn’t see me!” It’s insane. It's brutish.

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.
