“Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled” (Proverbs 9:4-5 KJV).
“. . . she saith to him, Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled,” of course, bread and wine is a picture of the body and blood of Christ. It is a picture of salvation, really. The invitation is there, “Come, eat of my bread and wine.” There is your salvation. A person is never going to get saved until they realize what they are. When they begin to realize just how bad they are, and how wicked they are, and how dumb they are—then God sends an invitation.
All through the Bible there are invitations.
“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isaiah 1:18 KJV).
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30 KJV).
“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37 KJV).
“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17 KJV).
“Come, eat of my bread,” but folks don’t get an invitation until there is a realization. He has to realize that he needs Christ, that he needs God, he needs wisdom that he doesn’t have. Then come and eat my bread. Christ is the bread of life (John 6:35, 48, 51). The Word of God is bread (Matthew 4:4). “. . . drink of the wine which I have mingled.”
George Whitefield, one of the greatest of all preachers, was a bartender in the Bell Inn. Unable to get along with his brother’s wife, he gave up his employment in Bristol and then, step by step, went to Oxford University. There he began his career in the ministry. Whitefield used to say that the difference he had with his brother’s wife was God’s way of forcing him out of business and calling him “from drawing wine for drunkards to drawing water out of the wells of salvation for the refreshment of His spiritual Israel!” Was it “just by chance”? We know it was God.
