Most Catholic Americans Disagree with Hardline Positions of Church Leadership

Just a third of Catholics report the church has had an influence on their political views. Most Catholics support abortion rights and feel that Catholic politicians who do so should be allowed to receive Communion.

The attitudes of many conservative Catholic bishops in the United States are not shared by most Catholics. A majority of lay Catholics support abortion rights, oppose denying Communion to politicians who support abortion rights, and favor greater inclusion of LGBT people.

On May 20, the archbishop of San Francisco announced that he will no longer allow U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to receive Communion because of her support for abortion rights. Only 31% of lay Catholics agree that politicians supporting abortion rights should be denied Communion, while 66% say they should be allowed access to the sacrament.

The view of Catholic Americans on abortion rights and Roe v. Wade are in line with the general public. About two-thirds of Catholic adults say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. Mainline Protestants and religiously unaffiliated Americans are more likely than Catholics to say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. But all three groups differ significantly from evangelical Protestants. Still, even among evangelical Protestants, few say abortion should be illegal in all cases.

They need to ask practicing Catholics who attend mass at least once a week, not the ChrEasters and CINO’s. Their poll results would be much different.

Count on the AP to give us the Saul Alinsky angle to issues of the day.

Exactly. These people aren’t Catholic just because they say they are.

They’re free to find another church.

No one is stopping them.

The catholic church is dead. I caught a lot of freepfire for that a while ago but I still stand by it. Pope Francis is just the Joe Biden of popes sent to destroy what was left of the organization.

Maybe we ought to have a vote to decide which of God's Commandments should be followed.   /s

I’d agree with you - if the priests taught what needed to be taught in their homilies. I know the Eucharist and Sacrifice of the Mass is THE reason we attend. But they have no idea how much most people yearn for words of Truth from them every Sunday.

Sorry to say but these people are largely in the norm. People who believe the Magisterium are in the minority these days.

You may have the blessing of being in a good, solid parish. I hope so. But I’ve found that for each solid parish, there’s going to be several that are squishy as ——

Putting this in a Archdiocese of Washington context: for every St Mary Mother of God Latin Mass parish, you’ll have 3 or 4 Trinity DC parishes (that are proud to Communicate Stretch Pelosi and Joe Biden).

Even in supposedly good parishes, how often other than in the week or two before the March for Life, do they take about the sanctity of life? How many ever talk about the dangers of illegal immigration? And other uncomfortable parts of Church teaching? I understand that there are only so many weeks in the liturgical calendar when such talks would be appropriate for a homily, but even then...

Are there good bishops out there? Absolutely. But if you’re honest with yourself, you have to acknowledge that they are in the minority. An infinitesimal minority.

Are there good priests out there? Again, absolutely. But, again, in the vast minority.

Are there solid Catholics out there? Yes 100%, but I can’t say that, even with weekly Mass participants, that it is anywhere close to the majority.

And the sooner we Catholics acknowledge that fact, the sooner we can figure out the next steps to take.

If accurate, that means most Catholics reject their own religion and are not Catholics.

And all of them are free to quit the Catholic church and join a heathen Protestant church if they wish to... Or any other cultist organization that they would prefer... The Catholic church is not a democracy.
