Top administrative leaders for the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in America, said Tuesday that they will release a secret list of hundreds of pastors and other church-affiliated personnel accused of sexual abuse.
An attorney for the SBC’s Executive Committee announced the decision during a virtual meeting called in response to a scathing investigative report detailing how the committee mishandled allegations of sex abuse and stonewalled numerous survivors. The committee anticipates releasing the list Thursday.
During the meeting, top leaders and several committee members vowed to work toward changing the culture of the denomination and to listen more attentively to survivors’ voices and stories.
The report is expected to contain new details about former Jacksonville Pastor Darrell Gilyard. He was a pastor at Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville in 2007.
He was convicted of having lewd contact with two teenage girls, sentenced to three years in prison and added to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s sex offenders list.
On Tuesday, News4JAX learned that the report includes allegations by a woman that she fought off an attempted rape in 1991 at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville. According to the report. Gilyard was working there when the Jacksonville woman, Tiffany Thigpen, says she was attacked. She said she was terrified and traumatized.
The report shows Dr. Jerry Vines, then-pastor of First Baptist, “was dismissive of her report” and told her “it would be embarrassing for her if others knew about it.”
And, according to the report, after that, Gilyard worked at a church in Texas, where other women accused him of abuse.

At least their not young girls or boys.
Big organizations cover things up or look the other way. Especially if they are inconvenient.
He was with teenage girls, that is still a child. Children should be safe in the House of God. I’ve given up on public schools but dawg our churches should not go to hell as well.
44?!
He's a total STUD!
Apparently he left them all a bit angry, but still...
Hee Hee Hee, now this Catholic can make hateful remarks about all pastors, like many of you do about Catholic priests.
Wait I choose to take the high road. I feel your helplessness toward all the hate that will be coming your way. Keep defending your faith. Man is corrupt, God is not.
“Big organizations cover things up or look the other way. Especially if they are inconvenient.”
You mean like the catholic church?
Got a question.....you own a Bible? And if so do you read it?
That’s what I get for not reading the whole article.
I read “women” which not the same as girl or even young women.
Well now, let's not pretend we can just sweep a couple thousand years of institutional boy-buggering under the carpet.
Where do you think all these other pastors got the idea from?
The SBC doesn’t have a big organization. That has been part of the problem. No one in the SBC can control much because all the churches are truly independent.
“Where do you think all these other pastors got the idea from?”
Is there a website?
My guess would be ‘ol Screwtape hissef.
When did he find time for anything else?
This had to be an open secret.
Wonder if the pastor had any ‘enforcers’ to keep the women quiet or pay them off. It’s usually one or the other.
Enforcers or Go To-Enablers, paid to ‘turn the other cheek’.
Something was done - he went to prison.
Despite massive efforts in the last 3 decades by so called “conservatives” against so called “liberals”, the Southern Baptist Convention has zero power.
Bad forces in that organization want it to become centralized and to have a hierarchy.
But the SBC is nothing but a cooperative effort for missions, books, training etc. The SBC has zero authority over any Southern Baptist Church. It’s up to the individual church to hire and fire any preacher. Conversely, anyone can open a Southern Baptist Church and the SBC cannot say a thing about it if they choose not to affiliate.
But I would say that there have is probably as big of a molester and pedo problem there as in the Catholic Church or or any of the others these days. And because of the structure of Southern Baptist churches, a bad leader can go somewhere else and get hired. There is not structure in that religion to prevent it.
Humblegunner that is not funny!
Studs don’t rape women
This man was doing rape, or attempted rape (the woman got away)
Exactly. They own their own building, pay the electric bill, hire and fire preachers. And within the broad swim lanes of the faith, each preacher and each person in the pews are competent before God to read and interpret the scripture.
It’s a very good system, not easily hijacked by those with denomination-wide designs, government, etc, and is not well understood.
Yes a Douay–Rheims Bible and yes I read it.
and Barbm, cool it with the jokes okay? Concentrate on the victims. People spend way too much time on the perps and not the victims.
I didn’t think Southern Baptists liked to use the word sex. It makes them blush.
