That's been a lively debate for three millennia now.
J Vernon preached three services at our church in his eighties. He wisecracked that his wife said they ought to have an ambulance standing by.

Indeed, Hebrews. Good post.

If she was anything like number 4 then one would understand King David’s “interest’.

Thanks, Alba. Gladly, we’re going to a place where this stuff never, ever happens.

Thank you both
very much for giving me the last 2 hours of fascinating reading and searching about Artemisia Gentileshi.
Raped and tortured at her trial!
I think I'm a little in love...

Their lie-detector text was somewhat more intense than today’s.

Trials such as Artemisia underwent impelled our Bill of Rights.

Of the 4 by "Arty" (that's my nickname for her now), #10 seems the least like her style.
I would not have guessed #10 was Arty's. The 4 do have 3 things in common btwn them:
The water "bowl"/container with handles.
A building in the background.
BATHsheba is messing with her hair in each.
This has inspired me to contact a couple of colleges nearby, to see if I can fit in an Art History course.
This stuff is wonderful, fascinating, & beautiful!

As an Architecture major at USC in the late '60s, I was required to take a two-semester course, World History of Art. I found it fascinating, although being fantastically busy I never pursued it--beyond becoming a dues-paying member of the LA County Museum of Art. But without that class, this Bible-art series would never have begun.
You'll have fun, John!

Architecture! Great!
We might have sailed past each other 'in the night', as I attended Bucky Fuller's 'World Game Workshop' at USC in 1973. Spent the month of August there. Hitch-hiked across the country for much of the '70's.
Even built an icosahedron cabin in Tennessee.

Yes, you can understand ...
But he had an obligation to respect her privacy (he was married to other women, she was married to another man).
She on the other hand had an obligation to keep her privacy private.
Both parties failed in their obligations, thought David’s was (IMO) the greater failure.
I have worked in “field conditions” with young, physically fit women.
I know whereof I speak.

King David and Bathsheba,,
.
Oh boy,Championship Boxing
Match with a First round
Knockout!
To: NorthMountain
It is easy to find people who argue that David compelled her presence by his regal position, thus making it, in effect, rape.

That’s a take on it I had not encountered previously. But if you’d care to see a real knockout, then return tomorrow.

That’s why I think his was the greater fault ... it’s dangerous to say “no” to the king.

Come to think of it, it’s dangerous to say “no” to the King of Kings. With Him, though, you can be sure He will never abuse His authority.
Earthly kings are much less reliable ...

Fabulous take. Thanks.

I recall a weeklong (seemed interminable) lecture series c. 1970 by a visiting professor—can’t quite remember if it was Bucky or one of his acolytes. Lots and lots and lots of boring and impractical stuff on icosidodecahedronsblahblahblah....
